Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson's current political playbook - a high-profile visit to the "Tonight" show, a splashy bus tour, the efforts to take a familiar actor and reintroduce him in a new political role - contains pages that look eerily familiar to California voters.
Maybe that's because the former Tennessee senator now has at his side some of same key aides who - in nine short weeks - helped transform Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger from "The Terminator" into the chief executive of the Democratic-leaning most populous state in the nation.
Thompson plans to formally kick off his presidential bid - shaped around the themes of "security, unity and prosperity" - beginning today with a blitz that reflects his media savvy and his advantages as an actor better known to many Americans as District Attorney Arthur Branch on TV's "Law & Order."
Thompson's campaign includes two veterans of another whirlwind effort - the 2003 California recall election starring Schwarzenegger - who know first hand at least some of the challenges ahead.
They are Todd Harris, who was Schwarzenegger's campaign communications director and will hold the same title for Thompson, and veteran Republican strategist and Fox News commentator Karen Hanretty, the former press secretary for the 2003 recall effort, who will be Thompson's deputy communications director.
Adam Mendelsohn, the governor's current communicators director, said the pair provide Thompson a "a big picture thinker out of the box" - Harris - and "one of the most effective political spokeswomen in the country" - Hanretty.
Both are "seasoned in translating the benefits that someone has from working in entertainment into a political reality," he said. "For Fred Thompson, it's a very smart hire: there's not a lot of people who understand taking a national entertainment figure and translating that into political value."

His NAME has opened quite a few doors for him.
He had name, and family, recognition beyond belief compared to most candidates.
The Olympics save was a good one, though.

I do resent the attacks on other candidates for no other reason than they aren’t Mitt or Duncan.
That may be about to change as there is a effort to change the winner take all electoral votes to a district by district count. We have to get the initiative certified in time for the primary.

Arnold cruised into office via revolution, aka the Recall, which in hindsight was a mistake. He would not have won a Republican primary. He won the recall due to a short pre-election period (not enough time to examine his beliefs) and because of the votes of independents and the starstruck.
We all have buyers remorse. He’s a fraud.
The top guy who engineered his recall victory went to Mitt along with a couple of other top name Republicans. There isn’t much left for Fred or anyone else at this point. No matter anyway. Fred will not win California. It will be Rudy or Mitt and both can give Hillary a run for her money here.

Now why b9, would I be uncomfortable with something that happened when I was in middle school? The woman gave a contribution 13-years ago of $150. The Romney’s have given exponentially more to pro-life causes since then, he has been honored by pro-life organizations, his wife serves as co-chairperson to a Pro-Life group, and neither have donated to Pro-Choice orgs since. But suddenly—oh so suddenly—they’re supect for being liberal co-ops. I guess if you’re into George Noory and Coast-to-Coast and the WTC conspiracies...I guess then that would be a pretty dastardly trick to turn, wouldn’t it? I’m just not a huge fan of aliens and bigfoots. You? Not that there’s anything wrong aliens. I’m sure they’re quite nice. Especially to such a benign guy as yourself, b9.
Me? Nope. I’m not uncomfortable in the slightest. And I find nothing inconvenient about those facts. Heck, I gave to Greenpeace and Democratic campaigns 7-years ago. Nothing since then, though I guess I’m suspect because the Romney’s have gone twice as long as I have. You can tell I’m shaking in my boots. ;)
People change. I endorse it, especially when they move with conviction in the right direction.
Who are you backing? Hollywood was Pro-Life in 1994, just like Romney. Red pick-up truck and all. I hope that’s not inconvenient for you. I don’t think it should be. :)

How old is this cartoon? I’m asking this because Tommy Thompson quit the Presidential race awhile ago, and there is a podium for “Tommy” in this cartoon.
He’s not going to be in the ‘debate’ tomorrow, but apparently at the next, one three weeks or so from now.
Speak for yourself. The recall was not a mistake. Davis was a shyster and the people kicked his ass to the curb. This ended his career and serves as an ongoing warning to others. This is a double victory for the people.
Yes, Arnold has been far less than what he promised but that does not mean that Arnold is less than what California might otherwise have gotten. Davis was twice elected after all. If you see an attractive up-and-coming conservative who has any real chance of winning a state-wide election in California in the next five years then please tell me who that conservative is.
