Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson's current political playbook - a high-profile visit to the "Tonight" show, a splashy bus tour, the efforts to take a familiar actor and reintroduce him in a new political role - contains pages that look eerily familiar to California voters.
Maybe that's because the former Tennessee senator now has at his side some of same key aides who - in nine short weeks - helped transform Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger from "The Terminator" into the chief executive of the Democratic-leaning most populous state in the nation.
Thompson plans to formally kick off his presidential bid - shaped around the themes of "security, unity and prosperity" - beginning today with a blitz that reflects his media savvy and his advantages as an actor better known to many Americans as District Attorney Arthur Branch on TV's "Law & Order."
Thompson's campaign includes two veterans of another whirlwind effort - the 2003 California recall election starring Schwarzenegger - who know first hand at least some of the challenges ahead.
They are Todd Harris, who was Schwarzenegger's campaign communications director and will hold the same title for Thompson, and veteran Republican strategist and Fox News commentator Karen Hanretty, the former press secretary for the 2003 recall effort, who will be Thompson's deputy communications director.
Adam Mendelsohn, the governor's current communicators director, said the pair provide Thompson a "a big picture thinker out of the box" - Harris - and "one of the most effective political spokeswomen in the country" - Hanretty.
Both are "seasoned in translating the benefits that someone has from working in entertainment into a political reality," he said. "For Fred Thompson, it's a very smart hire: there's not a lot of people who understand taking a national entertainment figure and translating that into political value."

Sorry, but while I fear some latent RINO-ism in Fred Thompson, it seems like cognitive dissonance to be simultaneously supporting Romney. I have a hard time buying into him as a real conservative, too.
He has many good phrases however some just only catch a few of them. ; )
Please don't be concerned. The key words here are "San Francisco Chronicle". Nothing they say should be taken with any seriousness.
“He has many good phrases however some just only catch a few of them.”
Ha! Good one.
But seriously . . . I liked what Mitt Romney said about Fred’s long awaited entrance. What’s the hurry? Take your sweet time to decide if this is what you really want to do.
Nein!
That’s mighty sweet of her...
Is she a Mitt fan too?
Every President, and even big state Governor, is surrounded by advisers, appointees, bureaucrats, media and other elected officials who tend, on average to learn left.
A few leaders, such as Churchill, Thatcher and Reagan, turn out to have a strong foundation of understanding of the key issue of their day, unshakable by bad or misguided advice. Most leaders, even Bush to a considerable extent on domestic issues, I fear, are eventually isolated from their past connections to reality, surrounded by leftist crap, and ultimately led astray.
It is very difficult, in my view, to predict the strength of a leaders understanding and whether it will be able to resist these powerful forces for the duration of their terms in office.
Though do you think they lied even about the names of Thompson's advisors?
And Duncan
And Tanc
etc.
Running a campaign is vastly different from governing.
I don’t think Fred will govern in any way, shape or form like Ahnold has.
Thankfully, the USA is NOT California, and Fred won’t have to campaign as if it is.
LOL!
LOL!
You have a real gift for “understatement”. ;o)
FDT won’t be running as a candidate in only California.
He’ll be running as a candidate for ALL of the USA.
Arnold’s team did a great job with his campaign.
However, FDT’s campaign won’t have to be left leaning to be palatable for the moderate CA voter.
Heck...I think CA has already been written off. ;o)
In any case, I expect FDT to set policy, and anyone who thinks he won’t be the one to do that is deluding themselves.
Ha!
Another very astute post by you! ;o)
With Fred beating Mitt in the national polls, Romney has more to think about than debating Hillary. Rasmussen has Fred at 20% to Mitt`s 13%. Don't worry about Fred, he'll do just fine. You better worry about Romney.
If Mitt did debate Hillary on healthcare, there would be mostly agreement on RomneyCare and HillaryCare. LOL
First...very good post.
I'm counting on FDT to aspire to be like the good folks you mentioned.
If he isn't...well...there isn't anyone else to do that.
That doesn't mean there aren't those for whom I would vote.
It just means that we need another Churchill, Thatcher, or Reagan...NOW.
Kill The Terrorists
Secure The Borders
Punch The Hippies
Whoever came up with that ... very funny!
“Dont any of you care that Fred is the darling of the Council on Foreign Relations? “
Ummmm ..... No. I dont buy into that conspiracy theory.
Please dont tell the Paul supporters. This will be a 500 post thread in no time.
“This reminds me of when Schwarzenegger was running for gov. The republicans went ga-ga over him, all starry eyed, while the real conservatives supported Tom McClintock. Now just look at this mess! I call him Schwarzenkennedy because he might as well be a democrat.”
True enough. We’ll see how Thompson’s campaign develops. If he picks up Arnie and McCain retreads, it might be a signal.
“Mitt Romney is the only candidate who can kick Hillarys behind. “
Mitt can do it. But some say only Rudy can do it. and FredHeads say only Fred can do it.
I say: If we nominate the best man and all get behind him - WE CAN KICK HILLARY’S BEHIND!
That’s a very good point.
Did you ever think we’d be scrutinizing the candidate’s wives as we have been?
After seeing/listening to most of the wives, I think I’ll go with the trophy one. lol
