Romney concedes Iraq "a mess," describes three-step plan

Confronted by an unhappy questioner, Mitt Romney said tonight at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire that the situation in Iraq "is a mess." [Video courtesy Breitbart.tv.]

Romney's assessment was delivered by way of agreeing with a gentleman who stood up at a Nashua VFW post and complained that the conflict is "an unmitigated mess."

"What I'd like to know is, what, if you get elected, precisely what would you do?" asked the unidentified citizen at an event carried lived by C-SPAN.

"Ok, well first of all, it is a mess," Romney quickly admitted. "So, so when you got a mess, there is no easy, good answer. Alright. The easy, good answer is to turn the clock back and do some things differently a long time ago."

Okay, while I agree that calling it a "mess" is somewhat correct because of the non-surge stumbling blocks that Rumsfeld and company through up four years ago, I certainly don't like a draft-evader calling it that.

Like it or not, this is the only way a GOP candidate can win in 2008. Anyone who suggests that the war in Iraq was run in a competent manner — or that U.S. troops are still going to be exposed to harm for the long term in Iraq — is going to lose in a landslide.

Nonsense. The key word is victory, not navel gazing should of could of’s. Mitt just lost his chance.

What all these politicians do is wrong. They need to understand what mess is - what specifically did the questioner believe was a mess.

Mitt cannot throw words around. We have the problem here with Arnold the fool - he says “health care is a mess” - but we never demand they define the mess.

Mitt needed to stop, understand the context of the question then address it.

I have to laugh at these people who call Iraq a mess.

It's a war arena. Germany was a mess, too, in WWII.

Yikes, Romney pandering to the MSM already? He must think he has it locked.

Too bad.

So, are you saying that Mitt's saying whatever he feels he needs to say to get elected?

Imagine that!!

Exactly...HOWEVER, eventually Germans had the sense to quit worshipping Der Fuhrer and realize that they were beaten. Isamists still hold out the hope of 72 virgins in paradise.

Dream answer for me:

"Yes, it is a mess in Iraq... but, politically speaking, it's little more so than our own government. That's democracy in action. Struggling, arguing and coalition-building are part of the democratic process. Tyrannies operate in non-messy political environments."

Let me see... you’re running to be the candidate for the Republican party... you’re supposed to be boned up on the issues... you’re making public appearances and taking questions...

What the hell is wrong with this guy? This is the number one issue you’re going to be confronted with. It’s the meat and potatoes question. They teed it up for you, now knock it out of the park.

Instead we get a little trickler back to the pitcher...

Romney, PU fella, that was a stinker of a peformance.

We leave Iraq when we’ve beaten the terrorists into submission. We leave when the Iraqis have enough self-confidence to run the show.

Go back to the dugout. You’re benched!

“”Like it or not, this is the only way a GOP candidate can win in 2008. Anyone who suggests that the war in Iraq was run in a competent manner””

Even Condi Rice said “thousands” of mistakes were made. The Bushbots will never be ready to accept Bush and his posse made mistakes that cost thousands of lives.

True. The Iraq war has been a mess (and nearly all of the candidates have admitted as much - they have to). That is the truth. Mistakes were made. Still, Romney and most of us (except some of the Ron Paul people) still support it and hope that the surge will be successful.

Mitt Romney supports our troops and their mission in Iraq (watch the video). He supports President Bush's "Troop Surge" plan to stabilize the population in Iraq and bring the conflict to a successful conclusion.

Gov. Romney Blasted Rep. Clyburn's Recent Comments That Good News In Iraq Was Trouble For Democrats.
ROMNEY: "We don't just need a surge on the ground in Iraq – we need a surge of support for our troops as well. Democrats say they support the troops, but many don't support the work they are doing to make the surge successful. Representative Clyburn, the third-highest ranking House Democrat, said it would be a 'real big problem' for Democrats if progress is made in Iraq. That's not a problem but good news for all Americans." (Gov. Mitt Romney, 7/31/07)

Yep, next he will be calling the Islamic cultists “winners”, for blowing up women and children in the marketplace.

Saddam and Sons, along with the headchoppers they funded have been quite the “mess” for decades, roaming the globe killing thousands with impunity.

I certainly don't like a draft-evader calling it that.

Why? Isn't the truth objective? He's running for prez, he certainly can't dodge the question.

To call it a mess is incorrect. To say that it has started to improve through the new strategy employed by Petreus and the hard work of our soldiers and brave Iraqis is the correct and accurate answer. Anyone with half a brain can agree with the fact that mistakes were made as they often are in conflicts. It need not be sugar coated and there is room to call into question the desire to win by the American left and people like Paleo Paulie given the potential for a regional conflict that could start a global war.
