Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Monday said he would welcome Republican rival Fred Thompson to the race, but also took some jabs at Thompson's long delay in formally announcing his candidacy.
Thompson, the "Law & Order" television actor and former senator from Tennessee, is expected to officially enter the race this week. Instead of attending a Wednesday night debate in Durham, N.H., Thompson will be in Los Angeles to appear on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."
"I think it will boost the ratings for Jay Leno's show, but I'd rather be doing well in New Hampshire," said Romney, who is leading in most polls in this early voting state.
Thompson's candidacy has been a shadow on the GOP contest. He has equivocated about getting into the race, while his campaign organization has been in flux. His entry comes remarkably late in a campaign cycle that began days after the 2006 midterm elections.
"Well, I guess the only comment I'd make to Fred Thompson would be: Why the hurry? Why not take a little longer to think this over?" Romney jokingly told reporters. "From my standpoint, if he wants to wait until January or February, that would be ideal."
That's when the primaries unfold in rapid succession.
Romney spent Monday opening his fall campaign, marching in a Labor Day parade in Milford and attending retails stops elsewhere. He said voters would note who is there and who is not.
"I think people will notice there have been a bunch of guys who have been working real hard to get to know voters across the country," Romney said.
As for Thompson's entry, Romney quipped: "I think he'll have some fun. We're going to presumably have some debates with him. We'll have had five without him."
Last I checked they had noticed Mitt enough to give him higher disproval numbers then Hillary.
*Applause* to Mitt for this great accomplishment.
Seriously, the only two guys based on numbers to this point that seem to be in the running for the nomination are Rudy and Thompson. Thompson is hamstrung by voters waiting to see if he’s the real deal they envision or not. If not, i suspect Rudy will get the Nom. Mitt thinks if Thompson is out, he’ll be the beneficiary of the larger conservative vote. Yeah, uh-huh, ain’t happen’. All that will happen is the most liberal candidate the GOP has ever had will be running for president because the nomination will be his. And he’ll flat out lose to hill.
Hope you keep your mouth open!:)
Duncan Hunter ping. We need your imput.
Link please.
You really should get the doctor to do something about that memory problem of yours. Maybe we can take up a collection. : )
“To me, Romney’s executive skills mean squat.”
To each his own. To me, someone who has managed something more substantial than the White House travel office or a Senate staff, someone who have a proven track record of implementing good ideas and can actually make good decisions ... would make an excellent candidate up against Hillary.
Why not have a CEO President?
” I want an insider now, someone who has been in Washington in the trenches “
Cheney ‘08! I’m in!
“Fred, Paul, or Hunter are the only guys who knows how to handle the jackals in Congressa and have foreign policy experience.”
Thompson’s track record in his investigative committee wrt to Clintonian jackals was not good; he got rolled by the Dems. So much for ‘bipartisanship’.
Ron Paul doesnt want a foreign policy that would amount to anything resembling what we need. That leaves Hunter, the one true-blue right-wing conservative standing.
But if you want someone to fight Democrats and *win*, the articulate Romney is , and it doesnt hurt that Romney’s vetoed more Democratic bills than any other candidate.
As for Mitt’s foreign policy ...

Following the end of the Cold War, President Clinton began to dismantle our military. He reduced our forces by 500,000. He retired almost 80 ships. Our spending on national defense dropped from over 6% of GDP to 3.8% today. He called it a “peace dividend.”
We got the dividend, but we didn’t get the peace.
Charles Krauthammer called our blissful disarmament a “holiday from history.” For history has plainly taught that evil is on earth and that there are evil people who will threaten the good, the peaceful and the free.
There is no question in my mind that if the opposition party had full reign in Washington, we would not only withdraw without regard to consequence from Iraq, we would also continue to reduce military spending to finance social programs. Some would celebrate, chanting that they are going to “give peace a chance.” But peace has had many chances and it will have many more.
History teaches us this: the best ally of peace is a strong America. ... The right course for America in a world where evil still exists is not acquiescence and weakness, it is assertiveness and strength.
Happy Labor Day! The anti’s are up and at it.
Meanwhile, Mitt Romney plugs along making friends wherever he goes. I like his style of campaigning. I like it that he seemingly lets the insults bounce right off and he keeps on plugging along with his agenda to get our America back on track.
Go, Mitt!!!!
Thanks for proving my point. YOU don't know what your talking about. You got a lot of catching up to do. I suggest you start reading.

One would expect the candidate's camps to go after either other's record, but the Fredheads are starting to sound really petty with "Precious Willard" stuff. Their excuse is "well, Willard is his real name, we're just repeating it."
Maybe the Romney camp out to return suit and start referred to Fred as "Lazy Frederick" on every thread about him.
I'm guessing about about two days the Fredheads would be up in arms screaming to the moderators about it.
Don't forget big government healthcare advocate. Romneycare is just what the liberals ordered.
Good natured and funny, and now I’ll read through the rest of the thread to watch the anti-Mitts explode.
I haven’t seen a daily hate thread today. Maybe this will be it.
Romney is the only GOP pres candidate who has real experience with health care and who has a plan for the future, without which Hillary will kick rear.
I can’t wait for Romney to debate Hillary on health care!!
An authentic insight into the man.
You’re so pathetic when you’re pouting.
Refute it. Refute the facts. I DARE you. Or are you going to tell me with a straight face that the MA federal delegation is 100% Republican ? How about the legislature ? And the Governor, too ? You guys have crossed the line from ignorant boosters to simple outright liars. Shame on you.
Don’t start, Billy.
RomneyCare and HillaryCare, two fine examples of liberalized healthcare programs. More big government!
