And, the Paulies wept.
Duncan Hunter doubled the totals of the next-closest candidate, garnering 534 of approximately 1,400 votes cast. Fred Thompson came in second with 266 votes, and Paul rounded out the top three with 217 votes.
Here are all the results:
Duncan Hunter: 534
Fred Thompson: 266
Ron Paul: 217
Mike Huckabee: 83
Rudy Giuliani: 78
Mitt Romney: 61
Ray McKinney: 28
John Cox: 10
John McCain: 8
Sam Brownback: 6
Tom Tancredo: 6
Hugh Cort: 3
Thompson had a very good showing, especially considering the Fred Head presence was fairly modest, and there were no campaign surrogates that I noticed. McCain, notably, beaten by two 7th-tier candidates. Ouch. And, the biggest ouch for Paul, who was unable to convert all that strange enthusiasm into a conventional win in his home state.
Hunter won because he showed up and shook hands, old-school style, all day yesterday and all day today. Only activists who've attended past conventions were allowed to vote, and they were receptive to his message and his commitment to the crowd.
Be prepared. The Paulettes will be out in force against you. And they’re not nice about it, either.
Recognizing that the only people allowed to vote were those who’d been delegates or alternates to recent Texas Republican State Conventions, I’d say Paul did pretty well.
John McCain 8. And still he doesn’t get the message and go away. How’s that immigration amnesty looking now Johnny?
Should have added: I read on another thread that one reason Duncan Hunter did so well in Texas may have been his firm stance on the border.
The consensus on the Hunter side of the divide is that Hunter won. Because Duncan Hunter did win, by double what Thompson got in the vote.
If Thompson flames out, our next president will be Guilianni, Hillary, or Romney.
Time to throw some support Hunter’s way instead of minimizing his win in Texas.
I think the Ron Paul people are learning the same lesson as the Howard Dean people did.....internet enthusiasm alone doesn’t translate into primary victories.
I think Ms. Ham needs to be more concerned that almost 17% of the party establishment voted for Dr. Paul says something about the growing discontent in the party than anything else.
Because Duncan Hunter is simply not a serious candidate. It’s that simple. On state wide polls, he shows up with 2-3%, max. Ask TEN Republicans off a given party list (and I don’t mean ten of your friends, but ten registered Republicans) “Who is Duncan Hunter?” and they will say “Who?”
Do any of the Hunterites ever read a poll? Your man isn’t going anywhere. I don’t know why, from what I’ve read here on FR he seems like a good man. But he just isn’t getting any traction. The Texas straw poll was the one bright spot in an otherwise unsuccessful campaign (so far). Most republicans don’t even know who he is. The only conservative among the top tier is Fred Thompson. I urge all Duncan Hunter supporters to consider looking at Fred.
No, it’s time to get real. DH is not a serious candidate, any more than Dennis Kucinich is.
From what I can see, Ron Paul’s the only one who generates any kind of enthusiasm. Those of us who support Ron Paul show up to support him and, when offered the chance, vote for him in straw polls. That stands in sharp contrast to other campaigns.
Duncan Hunter just won the Texas straw poll.
I dont know why, from what Ive read here on FR he seems like a good man. But he just isnt getting any traction.

Mainly because of guys like you that are frozen in their tracks by maintstream media annointing of the candidates. You’ll always get the Bushes and the Doles if you wait for the mainstream media to give the nod to the Republican. That’s what you will likely get with Thompson as well . . .
The "What, Me Worry?" Ostrich Brigade doesn't care about that.
McDonald’s has a straw poll. Yeah, that’s really impressive. Tell me when he comes in something other than 4th in a primary . . . ANY primary.
They aren’t “responses.” They are true. People here don’t want to face that, but there are really two choices, Rudy and Fred, with Romney coming in a (so far) distant third. However, Romney WILL win Iowa, and will likely win NH, and Rudy will win FL. So you can start figuring out which primaries DH will win.
