FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - California congressman Duncan Hunter has won Texas' first Republican Party Straw Poll.

Hunter got 534 votes. Former Tennessee senator and actor Fred Thompson came in second with 266 votes, and Texas congressman Ron Paul came in third with 217 votes.

The low-turnout event in Fort Wroth lacked the top-tier presidential candidates.

Other candidates attending were Chicago businessman John Cox, counterterrorism expert Hugh Cort of Birmingham, Ala., and tool & die maker Ray McKinney of Savannah, Ga.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Arizona Senator John McCain, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee skipped the event. Thompson didn't show up either. He is expected to declare his candidacy next week.

OK, what if we compromised? Hunter/Thompson or Thompson/Hunter 08.

That is SO wonderful! It bolsters my spirits, 'cause I was feeling really down between not ever seeing Hunter on t.v. news, and some dumb broad sideswiping my car last Thursday.

I looked at a part of C-Span 1 tonight and it was the Biloxi Herald editor talking about the effects of Katrina. Good grief!

He's won a few straw polls in South Carolina, won a straw poll in Arizona (back earlier this year, when John McCain actually had over 20% nationally), and came in first at the National Republican Assembly poll (IIRC, is that the name?).

With Gilmore and Tommy gone, Hunter has more of an opportunity now. Focus should now be turned to the Carson City pro-troop event (this Labor Day on Monday) and the GOP debate on the 5th (Wednesday). Let's keep building up that momentum!

If Hunter made the decision to join with Fred Thompson, I would no longer support Hunter.

The two men are like night and day. Not even on the chapter.

It’ll never happen. But I would walk away too.

Why? They’re both solid conservatives. Who would you nominate for VP then?

I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that as you’ve got to be asked first and I don’t think Thompson would ask Hunter. Or at least I can’t any reason he would.

“They’re both solid conservatives. “

Sorry, I disagree.

“Who would you nominate for VP then?”

Assuming your meant VP for Duncan Hunter, not sure yet, but certainly none of the “top tier” candidates, including the yet to announced, Fred.

Both men have stated they will not accept VP positions.

Just hearing freepers suggest it tells me that they are unaware of the very important differences between the two candidates.
