SAN FRANCISCO - The Bush administration can go ahead with a pilot program to allow as many as 100 Mexican trucking companies to freely haul their cargo anywhere within the U.S. for the next year, a federal appeals court ruled Friday.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied a request made by the Teamsters union, the Sierra Club and the nonprofit Public Citizen to halt the program.
The appeals court ruled the groups have not satisfied the legal requirements to immediately stop what the government is calling a "demonstration project," but can continue to argue their case.
The trucking program is scheduled to begin Thursday.
In court papers filed earlier this week, the Teamsters and Sierra Club argued there won't be enough oversight of the drivers coming into the U.S. from Mexico.
They also argued that public safety would be endangered in a hasty attempt by the government to comply with parts of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
The trade agreement requires that all roads in the United States, Mexico and Canada to be opened to carriers from all three countries.
Canadian trucking companies have full access to U.S. roads, but Mexican trucks can only travel about 20 miles inside the country at certain border crossings such as ones in San Diego and El Paso, Texas.
Hey BykrBayb...a toast to the soverignty once known and loved?
Once again the interests of the GOP-BigBiz Axis is at odds with the public interest. We are overdue for a purge of this party.
I remember it well. I toast, and my best salute.
Most people dont realize the cost to maintain a rig by US and state standards.
Just wait until the number of innocent interstate driver fatalities begins to pile up because of their nonchalance.
One good outcome might be that all the idiot car drivers who like to blurt in and out in between big rigs might get cleared off the road by Darwinian justice when they drive the same around the Mexican specials.

Mexican truckers will get a “free-ride” on the fuel-tax that
American Truckers have to pay, when they are in their fuel range of the border,,,to start with,,,($5000.00 plus per year),,,This Is A “KILL-SHOT” For The American Trucker,,,
I’ve driven many miles at my age and I have never had a problem with an American Trucker on the road,,,
I don’t care to get caught-up in nobody’s wreck,,,
Keep Mexican Truckers In Mexico !!!!!!
ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!! Wheeewwww! I needed that laugh, thanks ;)
The Teamsters union screwed the pooch by not supporting Republicans for so long that they can drop dead. This is the end result. Half their client base just walked away when asked for help. That union is screwed by their own past decisions.
All I can do at the moment is tap my fingers on my keyboard and shake my head right now.
#$^#$^ #&@*&$@! #&$*@&#$ !!!!!!!!!! #*@^!!
It would be nice if the Teamsters got old school about it. Blockade style ....
I dont see the difference in at all....there are a great number of illegal aliens already driving trucks in this country.
#$^#$^ #&@*&$@! #&$*@&#$ !!!!!!!!!! #*@^!!

I work for someone who picks up auto parts in Laredo, and delivers them to auto plants all over the US. He also sometimes picks up oil field valves there, and delivers them to the fields in the US, and Canada. These items are manufactured in Mexico, and then switched to American trucks at the border.
I have a feeling that a lot of owner operators like him are going to have big payments to the companies financing their trucks, but a huge slowdown in the loads they need to pay for those trucks.
Oh, wait, I will also be out of a job because if he isn’t working, neither am I.
Thank you President Bush, for arguing that to not allow this truck program would strain Diplomatic Relations with Mexico.
This program, and where it will eventually lead is going to strain my ability to buy groceries, pay my utilities, put gas in my car, and pay taxes, but it will all be worth it in order to not offend Mexico. /sarc
Teamsters can be extremely violent - if pushed..........
Looks like the Muslims who President Chavez taught to speak Spanish and provided with documents, now will have the PERFECT vehicle to deliver their Biological or Nuclear weapon into the heart of America...
We are a nation bent on suicide...
What will it take to turn this around?
Guess...
The Teamsters are at fault. Not Bush. Union members used to be tough guys, yet I saw union members whining and complaining like little girls at some democrat debate a few weeks ago. What happened to unions? I didn’t whine and complain in the Aircraft Worker’s Union. Nobody did. We were just fine. It’s sad to watch men do that and ask for a crumb.
Please don't blame American Truckers being sold down the river by our President on the Teamsters. The teamsters were just one of several groups who were against this, and were arguing against this in court.
“The Teamsters are at fault. Not Bush.”
At “fault”? Fault for what? This is Bush’s program, not anyone elses. No love lost here with Unions, but to blame them is beyond reason.
I had to go play with Harley,,,Better Now...;0)
How about laying the blame where it goes, and that’s on the President. Next, start blaming all of the worshipers of Bush who dare not speak any criticism of his policies. Then move along to the Conservitives and Patriots in name only that want to negotiate away just enough of their principles that they find them stuck with a liberal candidate and refuse to pull themselves away. Next, blame those who condemn and criticize the MSM on a daily basis, yet faithfully consume their entire day absorbing this very MSM garbage.
And the list keeps going...
