SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Authorities said they removed nearly 80,000 rounds of ammunition from the home of a South Bend man who warned that the world was going to end.
South Bend police and federal agents blocked off streets around Kevin Rieder's home for six hours Wednesday while they removed the ammunition.
Rieder, 38, was arrested Wednesday and charged with illegal possession of ammunition while subject to a restraining order, Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald Schmidt said.
The restraining order had been taken out by an ex-girlfriend, Schmidt said.
Rieder told employees at a gun shop where he bought 18,000 rounds that he believed the world was going to end, officials said.
He was in custody Friday morning, awaiting a Tuesday bail and detention hearing.
Oops...you are correct!
See I told you it was good! :) Not only weapons but really cool survival info set in a fictitious setting. I read a borrowed copy, think I’m going to have to get one of my own.
bump
Yes, this is a result of the Lautenberg Amendment to the "Protection From Violence Against Women Act"(or some such name) a few years back. It was a vicious little poison pill Sen. Frank Lautenberg-NJ inserted to expand the scope of the existing restrictions on felons possessing guns to include even potential or alleged domestic violence against women. It's flatly unconstitutional, but as we all know that means absolutely nothing to our selfless public servants these days.
Did I get moved to the USSR as I slept?
No, while all Americans have slept for decades our leaders have gradually imported, adopted and infused the essence of the Soviet Union into this country. The resulting cancer has already metasticized and the prognosis is not good.
That would make a great tagline.
whew...thought this was the ND quarterback in trouble again.
The police probably cured their ammo budget for the next year.
It sounds like some NRA lawyers need to make this into a court case. He is literally stripped of an enumerated Constitutional right on the simple accusations of one person. He has no opportunity to defend himself against the accusations.
That law makes it flat simple to disarm anyone at all. One need only persuade a judge to issue a restraining order, and that's it.
If a constitutional lawyer can't get that law thrown out, he's not worth his paycheck.
Let’s see how hard a time he has getting it back, then we will see if the cops want it or not.
YES
Only partially. The military obtains most of their 5.56mm ammunition from Lake City Army Ammunition Plant located near Independence, MO. Military ammunition acquisition has little to no affect upon the current supply shortage of commercial ammunition.
Increases in the raw material prices of brass and lead have been a large factor in the two previous ammunition price hikes this year.
There is a current shortage of commercial ammunition production capacity because of demand. When demand exceeds supply, higher prices can be expected. Capacity can not be increased quickly or cheaply in an industry that has been faced with too many feasts and famines.
Why was it necessary to block the street?
It seems to me that the gun shop called the police because of his comments. How else would they know unless it was a routine search of the house because of the TRO.
i take it you’ve never tossed a round into a fire. without the chamber and barrel, as well as the weight of you holding the gun, there really isn’t much a round will do. and nyou actually have more to worry about from the case than the bullet.
my wife never believed me about that until they finally did it on mythbusters. :)

Yes, and the raw material shortages are very likely connected to the war. It seems like that an obvious and significant pressure on the whole industry.
It is enough to make me wonder with all the official whining of late by police departments about ammo allegedly being in short supply. I wonder what caliber(s) are involved?
“What, no .308?”
I only kill paper. I try to keep the number of calibers I reload down to a minimum so I won’t have to change the press over so often. I generally don’t reload rifle stuff. I do, however make all of my pistol ammo over .22 cal.
Sorry. Never got drunk enough.
“But do you believe the world is going to end? Apparently, you can either have 1st amendment protection or 2nd. Not both.”
Well... Yes. But I figure I won’t be around when our sun goes supernova.
