Des Moines, Iowa (AP) --
Republican Fred Thompson, whose entry into the presidential race has been long anticipated, will officially launch his candidacy Sept. 6 in a webcast on his campaign site, followed by a five-day tour of early primary states, The Associated Press has learned.
The preliminary campaign of the former Tennessee senator and "Law & Order" actor is to disclose details about how he will formally enter the race in a Thursday afternoon conference call with supporters.
House parties will be held nationwide on Sept. 6. A tour of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina will quickly follow the Internet announcement on , with later stops in Florida, and a homecoming event in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., on Sept. 15.
On Wednesday, Thompson will appear on NBC's "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" but he won't participate with his Republican rivals in a debate that same night in New Hampshire.

By the time he does announce (finally), it will be an anticlimax.
Coward refuses to participate in September 5th debate.
Dittos
That would be shameful of them, because he won't be an official candidate at the time of the debate. Plus, please note that there are already seven more debates on the calendar after the September 5 debate, including two more (the next two) in New Hampshire, and Thompson's team is saying he'll be at all of them. That's more than enough.
A lot of people have seemed to care, or at least pretended to. The Mittwits still whine about Thompson's timing being "unfair".
These are not the traits of a leader
I'd say that refusing to act like a lemming and refraining from jumping over the cliff of "gotta announce early" is a better sign of a leader than someone who would move before they're ready just to appease people who don't like him anyway.
I wish him the best, but too little too late I think.
Try not to panic...Hill is showing everybody why they don’t like her...Fred knows what he’s doing.
Yup. It looks like he is skipping the debates to be on Leno? Not only is he a coward, he’s an egotistcal Hollywood actor. He’d rather bask in the limelight with the Calif. glitz than duke it out with the other candidates. Sorry Fred, you’re a big disappointment.

Well said and I agree whole heartedly. I think we will know enough about Fred's views in plenty of time to make up our minds. I could care less if he participates in the dog and pony shows that are called debates.
I see the official Mittwit response is calling Thompson a coward for missing the debate. Do you not know that there are SEVEN more debates already scheduled by the end of January, including two more in New Hampshire?

He’s skipping the debate to go on Leno?! Yeah, O.K., whatever helps you and Fred sleep at night.
He can't do the debate because he won't be an official (by FEC rules) candidate. The date of September 6 has more to do with reporting requirements than anything else. How can he be "ducking" debates when his team is pledging he'll attend SEVEN of them?
Seriously, do you Mittwits all get emailed marching orders, because you're the fifth one I've seen in the last 24 hours post the same pointless accusations.
“do you Mittwits all get emailed marching orders”
Got us. Busted! Guess I’ll have to turn in my decoder ring. Don’t forget to set your VCR for Leno. Should be a real intriguing interview.
How many millions has Romney spent to be in third place? I'd save the cocky comments until he actually manages to get clear of McCain.
Can anyone even call the “debates” thus far “debates”. Please!!! What’s next, debates on You Tube?
