New Jersey’s Costly Immigrant Burden (Good Read)
city hournal ^ | 08/30/2007 | milwguy

It’s hard to imagine a politician with lousier timing than New Jersey governor Jon Corzine. The day before the execution-style killing of three Newark students by several illegal immigrants—at least one sporting a long rap sheet—Corzine formed a commission to study ways of providing immigrants with greater access to public services. In announcing the panel, the governor said nothing about the state’s estimated 400,000 illegal immigrants, and the panel included no experts on law enforcement or national security who might recommend how the state could better protect itself in an era of porous national borders....................Back in the mid-1990s, Congress commissioned a project, under the auspices of the National Academy of Science, to examine immigration’s bottom line. As part of the project, nonpartisan teams of some of the country’s leading economists conducted two groundbreaking studies—one on New Jersey and another on California—that assessed immigrants’ contributions to the public good in terms of the taxes they paid, and their cost in terms of the government services they consumed.

I was not aware of the study cited in the article. If one is to look at the numbers, you can rationally conclude that the ILLEGAL south of the border immigrants are costing NJ huge sums of money, and the situation is the same around the country. I am sure that another study of this sort will never be conducted in our politically correct society, because of the results it would produce. Kind of like not going to the doctor when you are sick, because you are afraid of the diagnosis he might give you.

Every state faces the same staggering costs but no politician wants to anger "La Raza" and the Open Borders Lobby. The answer has been to resort to cost-shifting - to shit the costs for taking care of illegals onto American taxpayers. Until Americans demand a halt to the practice, politicians will continue to put illegals on the public payroll.

It’s much easier for our politicians to sit back and let us pay, with our taxes, for the illegals. As far as I’m concerned, every city should do a sweep, neighborhood, by neighborhood and round up the illegals. Send them to DC and let the politicians handle them. Or send them to the politicians home towns and let the citizens, that elected them, know what their representatives are doing to them.

As the late economist Milton Friedman summed up the problem: “It’s just obvious that you can’t have free immigration and a welfare state.”

With its array of expensive government programs and services and a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy toward illegals, New Jersey has become one of the country’s major immigration magnets, at great cost to its citizens, who already bear what is probably the highest state and local tax burden in the country. It makes little sense for Governor Corzine to seek ways to spend even more of the state’s money on services it can’t afford.

Politicians complain of tight budgets but have no problem with spending money they don't have on people who don't live in this country! Go figure.

>>Both studies found that immigrants used government services at a greater rate than native-born residents did. The New Jersey study found, for instance, that the typical immigrant family received about $4,044 annually in government services, about 11 percent higher than the average native-born family. At the same time, immigrant households paid about 8 percent less in taxes. The net result was that “the average native household generated an annual fiscal surplus of $232” to government, while “the typical foreign household was a net burden of $1,484.” The gap was even wider in California, where immigrant households produced a net deficit of $3,463 each, because so much of that state’s recent immigration had been in the form of low-wage, low-skill workers.

Though the study did not distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants, it did break down foreign-born households by the regions of the world from which they had come. In both states, the study found the steepest deficit in Latin American households, which in New Jersey consumed 26 percent more in government expenditures than the average native-born family, but paid 38 percent less in taxes. By contrast, immigrant households in New Jersey that hailed from Europe or Canada actually consumed, on average, less in government services than the typical native-born family, and paid nearly as much in taxes.<<

Oops.. I mean to say "shift." I apologize for the oversight. I've kept pestering the mods to give us an edit button for years like exists on every other Internet forum to no avail. I've always felt Free Republic should join the Internet Age. But that's my opinion.

If you're going to import cheap low skill labor, its not so cheap when the taxpayers have to make up the difference. In other words, the Open Borders Lobby has sold the American people a bill of goods.

"no politician wants to anger "La Raza" and the Open Borders Lobby."

That's the sad truth, though I believe Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo are the exceptions. I wish politicians would grow a pair and say to h@ll with "La Raza", the AmCommieLiarsUnion, and the "open borders" lobby. The idiots in Babylon-on-the-Potomac are probably still scratching their heads trying to figure out why their approval ratings are so low.

Send them to Crawford, TX and Hyannis, MA for starters. I’ll bet Teddy Swimmer would be delighted to welcome a mass of illegals at his compound.

ty much for the ping, B4. It’s always good to have some actual figures to throw back at the pro-open border lobbyists and those who claim that illegals are just criminally entering the country “to do jobs Americans don’t want to do.”

The sad thing is most folks in Jersey don't give a sh-t. There was a Pew poll posted a few weeks ago showing that the majority of the inhabitants of Sopranostan wanted the illegal to be legalized, rather than deported.

The who situation is complicated by racial attitudes as well. Many Jerseyites would prefer the illegals to blacks as their service class, as their is not the legacy of mistrust among the former (so they believe). Additionally, most illegals tend to concentrate in older areas that were losing population or decaying before they arrived. Its not like the average inhabitant of Chatham or Middletown has to worry about a family of illegal Ecuadorians moving next door, as they are effectively ghettoized in places in Paterson, Dover, and Hightstown.

Another issue to consider is that a signficant population of New Jersey are either legal immigrants or the children of legal immigrants (from places as diverse as India, Korea, Greece, Cuba, and the Phillipines), and are not exactly the type of folks that would rally around the preservation of "Anglo" culture. If such folks would only see how much it is costing the state (which adds to the burden of the featherbedding contractors and crooked pols), maybe we can get them on our side.

Isn't Corzine a public servant? As such he should check with NJ citizen taxpayers about squandering their tax dollars on his little 'idea'.

Thank you for the ping!

FTA: “Harvard economist George Borjas estimates, for instance, that 63 percent of Mexican male immigrants lack a high school education.”

IMHO, for Mexican male *illegal* immigrants, that figure could be in the 90 percentile.

This is frightening, when you think about it. The illegals may not be breeding future rocket scientists - but they are breeding at an alarming rate.

Looking around California, what they appear to be breeding mostly are little gangbanger punks with guns, baggy pants and tattoos.
