Fort Lauderdale Mayor Voted Off Tourism Board

Commissioners cited the negative effect the mayor's recent anti-gay comments have had on tourism from the gay and lesbian community.

Nearly two months ago, the mayor proposed buying expensive self-flushing toilets for restrooms at public parks to deter what he called rampant gay sex.

Since then, tourism officials said they have received hundreds of concerned phone calls and e-mails.

"The same government that is in charge of public health is also in charge of tourism," Naugle said. "They don't want anyone talking about public health when considering tourism. It needs to be talked about."

"We're just very happy that they've chosen to promote tolerance and acceptance rather than the mayor's bigotry," said Waymon Hudson of Fight Out Loud.

Commissioners said the mayor's comments prompted outraged organizers of one gay-oriented convention to put their event on hold, costing the city $250,000.

Commissioners also said sponsors of sporting events expressed reservations about advertising in Fort Lauderdale.

Isn't this ironic considering the situation with Senator Craig.

There goes the media talking/reporting out of both sides of their mouth. Big surprise.

All of them, no doubt, in favor of rampant gay sex.

These fudgepacking deviants are walking talking health hazards and the Ft. Lauderdale homos on the board are condoning it.

Well I'll never take my family to Ft Lauderdale if they are going to have the indecency to stop free and open gay sex. I mean how backwards can these people be. Why the value of little Jimmy or Sally being able to seeing open and loving relationships between two men who just met by chance in the park rest room is precious.

Think how great it will be when little Jimmy can learn first hand that it's OK to have another man enter your private parts as long as your in a committed relationship for at least 30 seconds. And little Sally, well she won't have to rely on old Ms. Bumpkin her third grade teacher struggling to show her how to fit that condom over the cucumber any more more. Why she can get real live lessons right at the park and be able to use the jungle gym at the same time.

Honestly, what's wrong with this backwards mayor that he would try and oppress so many in the community from such a wonderful experience and family fun?

I’m sincerely curious as to how automatic-flushing toilets help deter gay sex.

Here is a career opportunity for the soon to be unemployed Senator.

Craig seems to have some expertize and experience in the area of restroom sex, so the city could hire him as an expert to help them clean up their problem.

I guess all their movement inside stalls would cause the toilets to flush multiple times.

Ironic to me because the mayor is a democrat.

All of them, no doubt, in favor of rampant gay sex.

It's not that the merchants are in favor of gay sex, they just want the gay tourist dollars. Employers hire illegals for the same reason...it increases profits. They don't care if it's illegal or immoral...they just want the money. Greed will be the downfall of this once great country.

Its all about money with Fort Lauderdale Tourism Board SOBs. Mayor Jim Naugle is a decent man who took a stand against sexual immorality. If that cost him his job with the Board, I'm still proud to stand beside him.

It's not the Ft. Lauderdale Toursim Board, it's the Broward County Toursim Board. He's still the mayor of Ft. Lauderdale. I wish this article had been more explicit about that. What do you expect from a TV station website. Some of the news articles Google found were from "gay" website and were too explicit to use as sources for this thread. The article in today's South Florida Sun-Sentinel had to be excerpted.
