Feinstein, York at lunch: Main course, 49ers plan to move
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 8/29/7 | Phillip Matier,Andrew Ross

The temperature could get a little warm at the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce's annual 49ers booster luncheon today, as Sen. Dianne Feinstein takes the stage with a call for team owners John and Denise York to keep the Niners in the city.

Feinstein, a big Niners fan and equally big critic of the Yorks' proposed move to Santa Clara, tells us she plans to use the event at the Hyatt Regency to urge the 49er Faithful to break their silence, "rally forth and convince Mr. York that San Francisco is the place to be."

"I feel strongly that the 49ers are a San Francisco team and should remain a San Francisco team," Feinstein said. "That's what the 49er legend is all about."

No doubt, plenty of 49ers will be on hand to hear the message - everyone from John York to coach Mike Nolan and even the Gold Rush cheerleading squad is scheduled to welcome an expected 800 guests.

Feinstein hasn't exactly made a secret of her opposition to the Santa Clara idea - she's even sponsored legislation that would give NFL owners the right to block the move - but today's talk will be the first time the senator has publicly thrown down the pom-poms on behalf of San Francisco's stadium effort in York's presence.

Feinstein's message is expected to be echoed by Mayor Gavin Newsom, who will tell the chamber's corporate sponsors that they need to be "engaged" if they want to keep the team from moving down the Peninsula.

Be that as it may, Niners spokeswoman Lisa Lang says the team has no plans to pull back from Santa Clara as the top choice for the stadium that the Yorks hope to open for the 2012 season. San Francisco remains the team's second choice.

The reason is because she most likely has....

Hmm Maybe DiFi can get the city to rebuild Kesar Stadium.

Fact is there is no where left in SF to build a stadium and Candlestick is falling apart.

I guess they could pull a Seahawks -- raze the Stick and build a new stadium on the same spot while the niners play a couple seasons at Stanford.

Although I have noticed that Nobody has mentioned that Candlestick Park is NOT in SF anyway. It is well south of the city, albiet nowhere near as far as Santa Clara is.

Keep 'em in Frisco.

I just can't imagine the "Santa Clara 49'ers." I mean, Santa Clara is a sweet, quiet city name and 49'ers brings to mind tough, muddy real men gold miners. (I feel like I'm making a George Carlin rant.)

I doubt there is a rough and tumble football team name that could go with "Santa Clara."

Anytime a professional team want the tax payers (their fans) to do more than fill the stadium, it’s time to let them leave.

I am sure that Di-Fi is a HUGE fan. I am sure she is as big a fan of the Niners as John Kerry is of the Green Bay Packers.

The city would demand that the new stadium have only meatless hotdogs and beer brewed by the indiginous peoples of the Andes. Homeless cots would be available for all home games along with people of color getting all the lower seats. Corporate Fat Cats and “Mr. Charlie” would be forced into the upper decks so he can “feel what its like to be oppressed”.
Other than those demands, they can build any kind of stadium they want! Oh yea, no animals can be harmed in its building and no teams with mascots that cause “an uncomfortble feeling” will be allowed”.

To me, the 49’s conjures up thoughts of San Francisco...a mostly deranged freak show composed of the left of the left who hate America first.

Just because they move doesn’t mean the name will change. There’s plenty of teams, especially football teams with their larger stadiums, that don’t actually play in the city of their name. Heck the New York football teams don’t even play in the same STATE as their name.

That's nice Senator - now tell me why your opinion, as a US Senator, matters a hill of beans as to where I move MY TEAM, MY PRIVATE ENTERPRISE? I feel strongly that this is none of the federal government's business!

When I think of San Francisco 49’ers, I get sick, all the liberal law breakers, illegal gay marriages, cocaine snorting mayor, not to mention he is an adulterer. I think they should move.

When the LA Rams left the Colisseum to move to Anaheim, they were still the LA Rams.

The NY Jets and NY Giants play in East Rutherford, NJ.

Cowboys Stadium is in Irving Texas.

And I think the Oakland Raiders play out of a moving van!

Do you remember the nightmare that Spanos (and the politicians of San Diego) visited on the taxpayers of “America’s Finest City” when the Chargers couldn’t fill the seats. We were stationed in Oceanside at the time, and OMG, if I had been a California resident at that point, I think I may have actually hurt someone. And I believe, IMO of course, that it had all come about because what Spanos really wanted was to move the team.

The Miami Dolphins (and starting next year the Miami Hurricanes) play in Dolphin Stadium, which is just inside Dade County from Broward County.
