BAGHDAD — Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr has ordered a six-month suspension of activities by his Mahdi Army militia in order to reorganize the force, and it will no longer attack U.S. and coalition troops, aides said Wednesday.

The aide, Sheik Hazim al-Araji, said on Iraqi state television that the goal was to "rehabilitate" the organization, which has reportedly broken into factions, some of which the U.S. maintains are trained and supplied by Iran.

"We declare the freezing of the Mahdi Army without exception in order to rehabilitate it in a way that will safeguard its ideological image within a maximum period of six months starting from the day this statement is issued," al-Araji said, reading from a statement by al-Sadr.

In Najaf, al-Sadr's spokesman said the order also means the Mahdi Army will no longer launch attacks against U.S. and other coalition forces.

"It also includes suspending the taking up of arms against occupiers as well as others," Ahmed al-Shaibani told reporters.

Asked if Mahdi militiamen would defend themselves against provocations, he replied: "We will deal with it when it happens."....

The major factor is more probably the recent fatwah issued by a host of clerics that might be anti mookie unless he changes.

The powers that be see the writing on the walll..... join the new Iraqi government or be excluded for ever.

A good next step would be to "suspend" Mookie al-Sadr a la Benito and Clara.

It is REALLY hard to argue that The Surge isn’t working when the enemy has to take six months off to regroup.

I know why the MSM might downplay this but I think this news is huge. They can portray our Army reports as wishful thinking or pro-Bush propaganda, but they can’t portray the enemy admitting they need to regroup as anything but a huge military victory for us.

We should be posting this news at the top with banner headlines. The enemy is admitting retreat (if not defeat). I think now is when you hit them harder. Put them in your choke hold and don’t let up until they surrender.

WE ARE WINNING THIS WAR! Cut and run? Hell, no.

Truth is stranger than fiction. When I wrote that a year ago, the Felon Frog was still in charge of France, and the irony was that getting a conservative elected was a giant long shot then too.

The young were buring the cities down because of a modest change in the welfare state at the time.

Now Sarkozy gets in there, and he starts ruling from the RIGHT, no apologies.

Last week, he’s saying a nuclear Iran is a non-starter, and he’ll bomb if he has to.

Now, a year ago, could you have predicted that Iran would be calling for air strikes on Iran by end of summer 2007?

Truth is stranger than fiction.

Fascinating development. Mookie's had a couple of little sit-downs with the Quds as well recently. The Mahdi army hasn't really been his for a long time and I'm guessing that despite Ahmadinejad's recent threats they've decided they're not ready for a prime time dance with the Marines. Smart choice.

He certainly isn't the only one to figure out it's smart to cool it until the U.S. troops leave. The really smart ones figured that out some time ago. Ahmadinejad and the other mouths are insisting that the U.S. is somehow being humiliated when the murder bombers hit a marketplace but nobody's buying that anymore and the Iraqis are finally getting tired enough of it and strong enough to do something about it. Mook doesn't want to be on the bad side of that one. He's not so tight with the real government that they couldn't afford to make an example out of him.

It’s a “hudna”

They want a truce so they can regroup.

The only news I want to hear about that fat little fvck is that he suspended breathing activities, and that the suspension was imposed on him by one of our guys.

He’s going to continue to cause us trouble as long as he’s wasting air.

Points well made, but one thought:

“Ahmadinejad and the other mouths are insisting that the U.S. is somehow being humiliated when the murder bombers hit a marketplace but nobody’s buying that anymore . . .”

“but nobody’s buying that anymore . . .” Nobody in this case does not include the MSM and the Dems who become elated every time good and honorable people die over there.

Maybe this is related to the capture the Iranians in Bagdad and elsewhere. Maybe these Shiites know that they cannot count on help from Iran now...

All you say is true. And if we know this then surely the commander in Iraq also knows. My guess is that the pressure we be notched up and our guys will move for the kill.

The animals only understand one thing, crushing unrelenting force. Any sign of let up on our part due to anything they say will merely be seen as a sign of weakness.

They need to be killed, all of them, now.
