DETROIT (AP) - The U.S. Census Bureau says that Detroit continues to be among the nation's poorest large cities.
The bureau says an estimated 32.5 percent of Detroit residents lived in poverty in 2006.
Detroit had about 871,000 people last year.
The poverty rate for Buffalo, N.Y., was estimated at 29.9 percent.
The figures were close and based on sampling, so it's unclear which city had a higher poverty rate.
The Census Bureau's report on poverty in cities with at least 250,000 residents listed the rate for Cincinnati at 27.8 percent and Cleveland at 27.0 percent.
When you base so many government benefits on poverty, people have a powerful incentive to be officially poor.
Raise the state income and property taxes and give the poor people some more money. Sheesh.
Look at the Labor Union history, the demographics and THEN see if you can guess at the cause.....

The democrat party: Enslaving people since 1820.
What a pitiful, corrupt, evil excuse for a political party.
Right.....
To do so would force them to question their bull squat mantras of All Cultures Are Equal, Multiculturalism is the spice of Society and Diversity is our Strength...
Has any town thats been destroyed by “progressive” policies and under minority management ever made a comeback?
You should see it here in Naples, Italy! It’s ran by the same party (communist), but at least they are not afraid to call themselves what they are. It is kind of annoying to go off base around here, every beggar and their daughter knows a “rich” American when they see one.
Interesting. Thanks for posting.
Pretty hare to determine which is a bigger craphole, Detroit or New Orleans.
Both have that welfare mentality, both look like war zones and both have lost population.
At least Detroit has a baseball team to make one forget about their misery for short while.
Of course, their basketball team is falling apart, and their football team has never been very good.
A neighbor of mine is a pilot for D.H.L. and once in a while he has to wait for a day or two in Newark N.J.
He called a few weeks ago from there and about every two minutes he had to pause as a siren was going by.
He said well there goes another police car, there goes another ambulance, there goes another police car. This went on for about ten minutes and each siren was for a different call.
Some fine cites we have out there.
Look at the bright side: At least they're not below sea level!
I got a laugh out of the 2006 State of the State when HRH Clueless Jenny came into the house chamber, walked down the aisle toward the podium, and paused to give the Hip Hop Mayor a big hug. She hates his guts and he hers. That was almost as priceless as "In five years, (grin) you're gonna be blown away!"
Detroit...Rat Controled...Rat Squandered.
When was the last REPUB mayor?
James Couzens 1919-1922.
Detroit is a hole that is slowly dying. I had to go there on business recently. Somebody ought to put that place out of its misery. I think they have half the population they did 50 years ago.
