GOP Leaders Ask Ethics Probe of Craig

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Republican leaders called for an ethics committee review Tuesday into Idaho Sen. Larry Craig's guilty plea in a police sting operation this summer in an airport men's room.

Republican leaders also are "examining other aspects of the case to see if additional action is required," Sen. Mitch McConnell and other top GOP lawmakers said in a written statement obtained by The Associated Press.

They released the statement shortly before Craig's scheduled appearance before television cameras in Boise, his first public comments since confirming his guilty plea to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.

Craig entered his plea several weeks after an undercover police officer in the Minneapolis arrested him and filed a complaint that said the three-term senator had engaged in actions "often used by persons communicating a desire to engage in sexual conduct."

The bathroom incident in the Minneapolis airport occurred on June 11. Craig signed his plea papers on Aug. 1, and word of the events surfaced on Monday. The senator issued a statement Monday night that said, "In hindsight, I should have pled not guilty." . . .

I’m not for getting rid of the homos, just the ones who troll in public restrooms or run a prostitution rign from their apt or try to hit on pages or try to pass gay rights legislation. I guess that’s probably all of them.

Well, Jim McGreevey did similar things in bathrooms up and down the New Jersey Turnpike. But, since he was a good Democrat, and went to the folks at the Human Rights Campaign, who told him to give a speech and say he was a “Gay American”, then all was forgiven.

But, a bad evil Republican, who has said he’s not a gay American, well, the Dems. need to jump all over this, don’t they?

I think the Republicans are out of bounds asking him for an ethics probe. I am not sure he did any unethical, illegal and immoral yes. They should be calling for an ethics probe of Harry Reid who did do many things unethical. They should be calling for Craig to come clean, quit the Republican Party, or a least become an honest pervert and join the party of Barney Frank who as we all know mixed his immoratlity with real unethical behavior. Craig clearly did something illegal and immoral, and if the Republican Party has any moral standards disqualified him from membership in the Party, but an ethics probe is clearly a cop out and just demonstrates how far behind the curve the leadership in this minority party is.

Still waiting for the ethics probe of one Teddy Kenedy as the result of an accident some 35 years ago.

None the less as some posters have pointed out. Democrats circle the waggons and go down fighting. Republicans surrender on the spot. Until our side grows a spine, the Drive Byes and the Rats will have their way with us.

A probe for what? I think it's time to probe a number of rat senators.

This should not surprise anyone...election time brings the commie libs out...

Wasn't President Bush giving a speech today? Did it once again explain the real VietNam tragedy...by the actions of the rats millions died.

“You mean like when he said the word “guilty”?”

I think Craig should stick it out. Given the number here of his apologists, head in the clouds deniers, red-eyed blame-Democrat conspiracy thinkers, and guilty plea overlookers he might just have a chance!!!

Remember Mark Foley and get him out as soon as possible. Now who is the next possibility for GOP closet sodomite? This is why I don’t have any problem with peoples ‘personal lives’ becoming an issue once that person steps into the public eye. Yet another incident to leave a bad taste in peoples mouths. The should look to the way Governor Reagan handled the Battaglia incident and shoo him out ASAP!

THAT'S UNACCEPTABLE! The Senate GOP MUST PRESS for Senator Craig's resignation! The kind of conduct he displayed is not benefiting a United States Senator.

I agree. There is no reason for an ethics probe. The GOP has lost what little is left of its collective mind if it thinks further inquiry is justified. Craig pled guilty to soliciting sex in a public men's room. We can't have Senators who do that.

His resignation should have been demanded by now.

I just hope this scandal stops with Craig—that he’s not just the canary in the coal mine.

In a court of law, he's innocent until proven guilty, or until he pleads guilty!

One way or the other I want him gone.

If he won’t resign, then the GOP needs to do everything in their means to force him out.

I’ve had it with them protecting their collegues, and I’ve had it with their rotten core destroying everything from within. Start cleaning house Republicans - now. Starting with Craig but not ending with him.

Between Vitter, Craig, Foley, Taft and Stevens...I’ve reached the point where enough is enough. And yet some people say WE are to blame for the Republicans losing power? No, their ethical lapses becoming more and more routine in every endeavor they particpate in is what led to the loss of the majority. They’ve betrayed the principles they promise to support, they betrayed their constituents, they betrayed themselves and their families...ENOUGH. I don’t care if it’s gay sex in a bathroom or questionable finances or whatever it’s time the party be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up.

Oh, and Senator? You’re gay.

What exactly is there to probe? The man is a mentally ill sex pervert. I only wish the undercover cop had gotten him to verbally admit he wanted sex so there would not even be .01% of doubt by some people here.
