A Political Primer [ExileStreet]

Nothing that I’ve written recently has stirred up the hornets quite as much as a piece in which I declared my support for Rudy Giuliani. I can’t say I was too shocked. After all, aside from religion and, in certain strange circles, TV soap operas, there’s little that Americans feel more passionately about than partisan politics.

Frankly, the only thing about the response that surprised me was that I was mainly raked over the coals by Ron Paul’s disciples. I barely heard from Fred Thompson’s fans and not at all from Mitt Romney’s supporters. Make of that what you will.

The truth of the matter is that, aside from his coming across as the world’s biggest sourpuss, I really have nothing against Mr. Paul, except for the fact that he’d have no chance of defeating Sen. Clinton in 2008. The best he could do is be a third party spoiler in the tradition of Ross Perot and Ralph Nader, thus ensuring that Hillary would get to move back into the White House and once again train all the mirrors to assure her that she’s the fairest of them all... There is quite a difference, Burt, in voting for the lesser of two evils and voting a leftist to head the only major right-of-center party in the US. Voting for Rudy in the general is akin to losing a war to win a single battle. It would signal the end of the Republican party as we know it and stifle the progress of the conservative movement for years to come.

I, for one, will not take part in the suicide of a movement that I believe in. If that means Hillary is elected, so be it. The alternative, which is having nobody to fight the ongoing war against liberalism, is much worse than four years of Hillary.

I for one will not play this silly game. I would be content to vote for a ‘placeholder’. Harriet Myers and immigration ‘reform’ are two instances I cite where the base has carried the day.
I will not allow the ‘flood gates’ to be opened. Once you ‘give’ the populace largess from the treasury, you can never take it back.
We may be doomed like Sisyphus to push that rock up that hill but at least we can keep the rock from growing bigger!

Yes, I am the Fairest of them All. Even the Breck Girl cannot compare with me. I will be Queen over Amerika!

I didn't vote in 1968. I never liked Nixon, and ten I actually met Humphrey and saw him up real close. I lived in Washington for 12 years and was married to pulib events TV. I saw a lot of the pols up close. It does give one a jaded view of diminished expectations.

I think we have developed a new ability to make our views known and heeded in Washington. That is the true lesson of Myers and immigration failure. Rather than solely looking for a percise fit on beliefs, we might evaluate responsiveness. Who is it that cares what we think and want?

I, for one, am not looking for a self-important dictator out to impose his ideas on the rest of us, even if I agree with him. Watch out for those guys like Chavez who just advanced the clocks in Venezuela a half hour or Huckabee and Newt who would have us all running laps around our neighborhood in the name of wellness.

As for those who balefully predict that electing Rudy will end the Republican party, I suggest they read a little history. Ot, check out Christy Whitman, "It's My Party, Too." I sure would hate to be at you house on Thanksgiving when the out of town relatives show up.

And, Bush 41's tax increase, the nomination of David Souter to SCOTUS and George W. and the GOP's massive expansion of government and spending are three times the base hasn't carried the day.

And, Giuliani is vastly more liberal than either Bush.

BTW, Republicans held Congress when during the Meiers nomination and many Democrats opposed illegal immigration.

Don't bet on the GOP, which would be shrinking minority under Giuliani, stepping up and fiibustering all the liberal legislation RINO Rudy would push through.

Ot, check out Christy Whitman, "It's My Party, Too."

Proof you're not a conservative if you're touting Whitman.

Whitman is a perfect example of what a disaster electing RINOs to office ends up being. Whitman promised tax cuts and delivered tax increases. She packed the courts full of liberals that helped Frank Lautenberg regain his Senate seat. She constantly touted the idea of man-made global warming while in the Bush administration.

I might be a conservative or not. WE were talking Republican party. That is a different matter. And, I didn’t tout her. I just know and accept that those people are Republicans, too.
