Falcons Are Better Off, But Does Michael Vick Really Deserve Prison Time?
North Star Writers Group ^ | August 27, 2007 | Nathaniel Shockey

Michael Vick was always something of an Allen Iverson for Atlanta.

Without him, the team is terrible, and with him, the team can never be great. He’s a wonderful athlete who dominates little more than the highlight reel. Truth be told, I seriously doubt the Falcons would have ever succeeded with Vick at the helm.

As far as I’m concerned, the dog-fighting scandal was one of the best things that could have happened to the Falcons. They had to get rid of him somehow, even if they didn’t want to accept it. Michael Vick had a special appeal with the culture of Atlanta, which everyone knows but very few people admit. He was a champion, of sorts, for one half of the segregated South.

I have a problem with federal laws regarding animal fighting (I see no federal issue with animal fighting), having said that he broke the law and deserves jail time.

Vick’s punishment should come from the NFL. Banning Vick from football would amount to a $50,000,000.00 fine. That is sufficient punishment, and such a punishment does not rely on giving rights to a dog as a basis for legal reasoning.

Personally, I think it might be best if dog fighters were fined and caned.

Fining and caning would work for a whole lot of crimes.

No its not. Killing animals wily-nily is cruel, and sooner or later translates into human abuse.

Vick already knows he’s going to jail.

He was “associated with gambling” ... it seems to me that should be a lifetime suspension from professional sports ... if it worked to rehabilitate Pete Rose, why wouldn’t it rehabilitate Mr. Vick? (If Vick plays again, then Pete should be in the Hall of Fame!).

The Falcons could have drafted LaDainian Tomlinson instead of Vick. That still makes me giggle.

Yep, he needs jail time.

Animal abuse has been a crime since Mr. Bergh started the New York SPCA back in the 1880s. The impetus for Mr. Bergh's campaign was that brutality to animals encourages brutality to humans and debases the abuser. He saw plenty of that on the mean streets of Manhattan.

And a highly organized dogfighting organization like Vick's also leads to other crimes -- gambling, racketeering, theft, etc. Not to mention the cruelty of killing the "underperformers" in highly sadistic ways like electrocution, drowning and beating. That tells you that these people have a screw loose and it was only a matter of time before they turned to humans for their kicks.

There are some laws that apply to the “nation”..interstate gambling illegally and interstate criminal trafficking are some of them. Otherwise, just keep moving and you never really get caught.

I understand moving across statelines in engaging in a criminal enterprise, however, animal fighting per se has no federal interest in my opinion.

If the same situation were to happen to Donovan McNabb, Peyton Manning, or LaDainian Tomlinson, the story would have an entirely different importance. Their teams need them.

This is also where the author loses me.

The Eagles won the division without McNabb at the helm last season. He’s the most overrated QB in the game, who choked in the Super Bowl [literally vomited in the huddle], yet continues to be held up as a gold standard for his position.

Rush was right about this guy: he’s a media darling that the left wing sports press is openly rooting for on the basis of liberal white guilt, and their outcry over his comments proved his point.

Vick did not kill animals willy-nilly. He killed underperforming animals, which were not marketable. This happens every day of the week.

I got my dog from a breeder who places every single one of her pups. She breeds for the show circuit, but non-conforming pups are all sold as pets, with a requirment that they be neutered by 6-months. Most puppy mills do not do this.

Just how did it rehabilitate Pete Rose?

Rose already lost everything... what did this cost him, after the fact?

Vick is a sociopath.

Selling them as pets is a little different than dousing them in water before affixing them to car batteries.

The law should treat all equally. The fact that Vick will lose financially is a completely separate issue from what he has done criminally.

If the guy that has a $20,000 job can’t get off by sobbing that he’s already lost his employment, then Vick shouldn’t either.

Vick’s personal financial losses should matter not to the court.

That would have been—Michael Vick.
