Falcons Are Better Off, But Does Michael Vick Really Deserve Prison Time?
North Star Writers Group ^ | August 27, 2007 | Nathaniel Shockey

Michael Vick was always something of an Allen Iverson for Atlanta.

Without him, the team is terrible, and with him, the team can never be great. He’s a wonderful athlete who dominates little more than the highlight reel. Truth be told, I seriously doubt the Falcons would have ever succeeded with Vick at the helm.

As far as I’m concerned, the dog-fighting scandal was one of the best things that could have happened to the Falcons. They had to get rid of him somehow, even if they didn’t want to accept it. Michael Vick had a special appeal with the culture of Atlanta, which everyone knows but very few people admit. He was a champion, of sorts, for one half of the segregated South.

Sorry, I’m not a lawyer. You’ll have to take your legal arguments somewhere else. Torturing an animal for sport/pleasure seems like a think that should be illegal. I’m not sure what valid legal basis needs to be met, simple simple common sense tells me it should be that way.

DOES MICHAEL VICK DESERVE JAIL TIME?

Yes. A mistake is when you dial a wrong number or forget your briefcase. His torture of animals was planned and enjoyed — otherwise he wouldn’t have kept on participating in it and financing it. This is not a mistake. It is evil.

Not to mention that vicious dogs are a danger to society, and deliberately breeding vicious dogs is damaging to the breed as a whole.

It is more about engaging in an illegal gambling activity than killing animals.

Does Michael Vick Really Deserve Prison Time?

Not just "yes," but "Hell Yes."

He won't get enough.

Yep, he needs jail time.
Animal abuse has been a crime since Mr. Bergh started the New York SPCA back in the 1880s. The impetus for Mr. Bergh’s campaign was that brutality to animals encourages brutality to humans and debases the abuser. He saw plenty of that on the mean streets of Manhattan.

And a highly organized dogfighting organization like Vick’s also leads to other crimes — gambling, racketeering, theft, etc. Not to mention the cruelty of killing the “underperformers” in highly sadistic ways like electrocution, drowning and beating. That tells you that these people have a screw loose and it was only a matter of time before they turned to humans for their kicks
________________

You know it amazes me some on FR try to use hunting or slaughterhouses, and other straw man arguments to excuse animal abuse and torture for entertainment.
I guess some really have trouble seeing that Vick is a pure mental case. He needs to be in a psycho ward getting mental help. People who are involved in dogfighting have a nasty violent mindset.

Rush was wrong. Because:
1) McNabb is a much better than average QB. Check out the numbers.
2) McNabb has not EVER gotten a break in the media, especially here in Philly.

What do you think?

Sorry, I’m not a lawyer.

No apologies necessary. Neither am I.

Your reasoning seems to be pretty par for the course. People don't like animal cruelty, so they think it should be illegal. That is about as deep as the thinking goes.

But the "Because I don't like it" standard is the slipperiest of slippery slopes.

I agree it’s a slippery slope. But Vick and other PsOS show that at least some rudimentary laws must be put on the books.

My point was, there are a lot of people out there killing non-performing or non-conforming dogs. It is not just Michael Vick and it is not just dogfighting operations.

It is in this indictment.

Not in the court of public opinion, which is where is toughest rahabilitation will be.

The Feds and the NFL can target gambling with the greatest ease. Less so with the dogfighting, because its lack of prevelance with either.

Maybe he deserves to be slammed down on a concrete floor by a defensive tackle. Maybe he deserves to be electrocuted. Maybe he deserves to be hung. He knows how to dish that out to God’s creatures and man’s best friend.

Rush was right about this guy: he’s a media darling that the left wing sports press is openly rooting for on the basis of liberal white guilt, and their outcry over his comments proved his point.

That was true in years past, but this year, you'd be smart to draft him onto your Fantasy Team.
