Falcons Are Better Off, But Does Michael Vick Really Deserve Prison Time?
North Star Writers Group ^ | August 27, 2007 | Nathaniel Shockey

Michael Vick was always something of an Allen Iverson for Atlanta.

Without him, the team is terrible, and with him, the team can never be great. He’s a wonderful athlete who dominates little more than the highlight reel. Truth be told, I seriously doubt the Falcons would have ever succeeded with Vick at the helm.

As far as I’m concerned, the dog-fighting scandal was one of the best things that could have happened to the Falcons. They had to get rid of him somehow, even if they didn’t want to accept it. Michael Vick had a special appeal with the culture of Atlanta, which everyone knows but very few people admit. He was a champion, of sorts, for one half of the segregated South.

If your breeder is “placing every single pup” then that breeder is being irresponsible.

Well, since she only breeds one litter a year, and handles a pretty robust breed, she has not run into these problems. Any non-conforming pups are sterilized by six months, on pain of some really huge liquidated damages incorported into the sales contract. She does keep one dog that was born lame as a household pet, but she has not bred him, obviously.

Vick did not kill animals willy-nilly. He killed underperforming animals
___________

I guess that makes it OK, then. /s

I’m confused about the comments regarding your breeder. You can’t be comparing your breeder’s treatment of non conformers to Vick’s treatment of underperformers, can you?

Yes,. he certainly does.

And I don’t understand anyone that believes otherwise.

“The Falcons could have drafted LaDainian Tomlinson instead of Vick. That still makes me giggle.”

I didn’t realize that...as a Charger fan I’m eternally grateful for their choice. ;-)

So you are against laws that prohibit the torture of animals? Interesting.

Yes, I am. I take it that you are not.

If you are not, could I ask why you think it should be against the law? On what legal basis should there be such a law?

“I have a problem with federal laws regarding animal fighting (I see no federal issue with animal fighting), having said that he broke the law and deserves jail time.”

The federal charges are only for the interstate trafficking.

I guess most folks haven’t yet realized there’ll also be state charges, most likely with much higher penalties. Sometimes, stupidity does hurt. ;-)

Vick will absolutely never play another down of NFL football.

Of course not. See my Post #25.

I recall that draft because the Pats drafted 5-time Pro Bowl Defensive End Richard Seymour instead of the guy many fans wanted the Pats to draft: flashy WR David Terrell, who may not even be in the league right now.

The Cardinals, Browns, and Bengals also passed over LT.

“He was a champion, of sorts, for one half of the segregated South.”

The funny thing is that in a lot of ways the South is less segregated than the north and the mid-atlantic. I’ve lived in all three and black and white folks generally live in closer proximity jn the south and you tend not to see huge onerace enclaves in the South.

>My point was, there are a lot of people out there killing non-performing or non-conforming dogs.<

You find this activity in puppy mills, but you don’t find responsible hobby breeders doing such things.

So you are of the “If it feels good do it” Philosophy then? Bestiality would be legal in your book? Sounds like you are saying that.

I imagine "puppy mills" have different methods.

Vick should never play pro football again and be required to return at least his latest bonus. He might not serve jail time. It all depends on how much he "cooperates" and whether the judge accepts or rejects the vague non-admission of the plea deal.

You’re correct. I would put my love for dogs second to none. But it is a real slippery slope to begin arresting people for what their actions might indicate about future behavior.

I’d say 20 years without the possibility of parole would be about right for this low-life thug.

If the same situation were to happen to Donovan McNabb, Peyton Manning, or LaDainian Tomlinson, the story would have an entirely different importance. Their teams need them.

The Falcons don't need Vick? We'll see how that line changes when they go 4-12 this season. They were "NFC Championship contenders" within the past 2 years.

I was just asking what you would consider being a valid legal argument for making animal cruelty illegal. Bestiality, for instance, could be regulated from a public health point of view. Lots of nasty disease vectors, there...

Not really my cup of tea, in any case...
