Falcons Are Better Off, But Does Michael Vick Really Deserve Prison Time?
North Star Writers Group ^ | August 27, 2007 | Nathaniel Shockey

Michael Vick was always something of an Allen Iverson for Atlanta.

Without him, the team is terrible, and with him, the team can never be great. He’s a wonderful athlete who dominates little more than the highlight reel. Truth be told, I seriously doubt the Falcons would have ever succeeded with Vick at the helm.

As far as I’m concerned, the dog-fighting scandal was one of the best things that could have happened to the Falcons. They had to get rid of him somehow, even if they didn’t want to accept it. Michael Vick had a special appeal with the culture of Atlanta, which everyone knows but very few people admit. He was a champion, of sorts, for one half of the segregated South.

Vick’s punishment should come from the NFL.

NFL is America's newest law enforcement agency ?
When did that happen ?

Selling them as pets is a little different than dousing them in water before affixing them to car batteries.

Which is why I use this particular breeder.

My point was, there are a lot of people out there killing non-performing or non-conforming dogs. It is not just Michael Vick and it is not just dogfighting operations.

The NFL has a contract with Michael Vick. They can punish him under the terms of that contract.

"No its not. Killing animals wily-nily is cruel, and sooner or later translates into human abuse."

I agree. Animals like Vick who take pleasure in torturing 'living things', if allowed, would have humans in the ring next. String up the sick bastard. There are thousands like him out there who think this sort of stuff is 'cool'.

A guy who has hit 'life's lottery' chooses to use his multi-millions to inflict pain and suffering should be cleansed from the gene pool.

I don't think we should be buffaloed into embracing a legal doctrine which grants human rights to dogs in order to prevent what Michael Vick might do next.

You and I torture living things every day. It is only a question of how far down the anthropomorphic scale you want to go.

Vick did not kill animals willy-nilly. He killed underperforming animals, which were not marketable. This happens every day of the week.

Aren't you the mental powerhouse with a heart of gold. You're FR membership should be "killed" for "under-performing" intellectually.

And no, Vick didn't kill the dogs "willy-nilly" - he drowned them, he beat them, he electrocuted them, he.........

“I got my dog from a breeder who places every single one of her pups. She breeds for the show circuit, but non-conforming pups are all sold as pets, with a requirment that they be neutered by 6-months. Most puppy mills do not do this.”

If your breeder is “placing every single pup” then that breeder is being irresponsible. There are several reasons but I will give you one. The Miniature Schnauzer breed has a genetic predisposition to develop cataracts. This genetic flaw can be observed and screened out shortly after birth. Most responsible breeders do this in an effort to remove this problem from the breed and to prevent grief for an owner when a dog becomes older. I’ll give you another; the German Shepard breed has a genetic predisposition for hip problems. In fact, many police departments has stopped using them because they tend to become incapacitated too early in their lives/careers. Responsible breeders are trying to clean up this problem for as well. Oh, forgot to mention - the only way to clean a breed with these sort of problems is to put down any pups who exhibit these problems, then breed only dogs that are considered safe...

You can speak for yourself all you want but you're presumptive "and I" is beyond you're ability to state with certainty, let alone to presume at all.

Why do they keep defending this guy? He’s pleading guilty, and he’ll get what the law indicates he should get.

If any of us got sent to prison, would there be all this whining and crying? I know the guy can throw a football, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t responsible for his actions.

The 50 mil you speak of is loss of future earnings. Not the same as a fine.

“Does Michael Vick Really Deserve Prison Time?”

He was the kingpin in an illegal interstate gambling operation where people bet on dogs killing each other.

Duh!

So you are against laws that prohibit the torture of animals? Interesting.
