U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today announced that she will introduce a resolution to abolish the Electoral College and provide for the direct popular vote of the President. Senator Feinstein's announcement comes against the backdrop of a bid in California to qualify a ballot initiative that would skew the outcome of Presidential elections.
"This proposed California initiative is very dangerous it is an attempt to tinker with state law in order to influence the outcome of national Presidential elections," Senator Feinstein said.
"There is no question that our system of electing a President is outmoded, but this initiative is not the way to do it. I believe that the Electoral College must be abolished, and that the President be elected through direct popular election."
"Under the current system, it is possible for a Presidential candidate to lose the popular vote, but to be elected by the Electoral College. This has happened four times in the nation's history, most recently in 2000."
"And the current system enables a handful of states to become battleground states, and disenfranchises tens of millions of American voters in the most important election in the nation. By amending the Constitution to abolish the Electoral College, and replacing it with a system in which the winner is the candidate with the most votes nationwide, we will ensure that the method of electing the President and Vice President is fair and uniform."
Currently, California gives all of its 55 electoral votes to the candidate winning the popular vote statewide. This method is used by almost all the states. Under the initiative drive being circulated in California, the state would give Presidential candidates one electoral vote for every Congressional district that they win, plus two electoral votes for whichever candidate gets the most votes in the state.

I thought she wanted to secede after Nov. 84. Wouldn’t that make us all happy.
This is why the dems wants as many illegals as they can cram into the country to remain here. This goes hand in hand as to why the dems do not want voters to have to show ID at the voting booth. Let’s not forget that dems also want convicted felons to have their voting rights restored (most them them are minorties who always vote democrat).
The voters need to abolish Feinstein in the next election.
Next she will introduce a bill to sign up all the occupants in the cemetaries along with the illegal aliens not yet in this country! Do we need to say more about what awaits us in 2008 if they win?

she should not have her finger on the trigger unless she’s ready to shoot at something. don’t give untrained morons guns. even if it is for show and propaganda.
Ralph Nader should be jumping all over this one, because that would make his campaigns completely irrelevant, instead of just mostly.
It is the back-door attempts to circumvent the Electoral College (without the inconvenience of passing a constitutional amendment to abolish it) that very much disturb me--regardless of which party might benefit in the short term by such questionable tinkering with the system.
If that happens the heartland may take ‘measures’ to ensure it doesn’t really effect them..!
Screw the small states, they don't really count anywauy, do they di?
If only we had a county-by-county Electoral College in California! Not-so-Feinstein wants to duplicate nationally the CA situation, where two large population centers control who gets elected.
The Constitution is a problem for Democrats, because it creates a government based on a Republic. The Democrats don’t want a Republic, they want a Democracy. Libya is a democracy. Every citizen votes on every issue and the result is chaos with a ballot box. We elect representatives to vote for us.
The Electoral College is part of the Republic style of government.
Democrats for the most part are too ignorant to understand the Electoral College concept so they choose to dislike it. Maryland, this past year, took it one step further into chaos by disenfranchising its citizens. All of Maryland’s electoral votes will go to whichever candidate receives the most electoral votes by the other states. Maryland voters no longer have the right to vote for the President of the United States. Thank the DimocRATs for this.
Sounds a bit like the final chapters of 'Atlas Shrugged', which is how this silly law would likely play out in the long term.
I have a feeling were headed toward another civil war, but the next one will be rural conservatives vs. urban liberals.
What an ignorant harpie.
She just was defeated on bringing up the Fairness Doctrine and opening up ports to the Chinese. This will go over just as well, LOL!
Vermont has two Senators. California has two Senators. There are more people in Orange County California than in the entire State of Vermont.
See a trend here? Abolish the Electoral College the same day you abolish the United States Senate.
