CBS) HAWTHORNE, Calif. Two children menaced by pit bulls in Hawthorne were safe Friday, but a woman running from the dogs broke her leg and a squad car being driven to the scene collided with another vehicle, injuring an officer and a motorist, police said.
A report that two pit bulls were menacing a 16-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother in the 2900 block of 141st Place at El Segundo Boulevard and Prairie Avenue was received by Hawthorne police about 8 a.m., Hawthorne police Lt. Michael Ishii said.
An animal-control officer distracted the dogs with a chemical spray, and the children ran to safety, Ishii said.
No one was bitten, but a woman who ran from the dogs fell and broke her leg, and she was taken to a hospital, Ishii said.
Meanwhile, an officer driving to the scene crashed into another vehicle at El Segundo Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, he said.
Paramedics transported the officer and the other motorist for treatment of ''minor-to-moderate'' injuries, he said.
The dogs were returned to their owner, who lives in the neighborhood, and police issued a citation for violation of the leash law, Ishii said.

In order, big 3:
#1 Pit Bulls
#2 Rottweilers
#3 German Shepards
Next:
#4 Husky - types
#5 Malamutes
#6 Wolf-dog hybrids
Falls off pretty quickly after that.
I was bit by a German Shepard when I was a child. I don’t bother dogs I don’t know. However, these pit bull incidents are getting out of hand.
As I said before, all pit defenders, please start posting all the Dalmatian, Beagle, Greyhound attack stories and I might change my mind.
” And is there any FR thread about the Georgian plane firing on a Russian one?”

Seriesly, the punishment for abusing the right to own an animal like that should be stiff enough to “persuade” compensating men/women who own them to keep them under control.
Good point.
I guess it’s in the eye of the beholder. I have never found those mean little eyes “cute”.
A citation and what would they do to you if you left a loaded shot gun laying in the middle of a play ground with the safety off.
Hope the woman with the broke legs get a good attorney!
That is because a responsible person would not own one of the damn things to begin with.
That face gives you the chills? That sweet little puppy isn’t a bad dog. It reminds me of the dog I babysat, years ago. Yeah, her owner reclaimed her and turned her mean. She didn’t start out mean.
I am quite responsible, thank you, and I have and do own them. Not one has ever caused harm to a single person.
I love how we always have folks on here to defend the dog of peace. Are most pits fine? Sure but why get a dog that has the destructive potential of a pitbull if it ever snaps? Why not get a lab or a setter or something that couldn’t eat the face of your neighbor or kill your child? l Not to mention the fact that many were bred to fight.
Now THAT is cute...and BTW, no one is going to blame my GUN for killing or maiming anyone. They would blame the person who pulled the trigger. Dogs will NEVER be completely under someones control. I think that is why people like me think the breed should be exterminated. Nothing personal towards the animal, I just don't trust ANY large animal with the kinds of equipment these dogs have.
Sorry-JMHO
“I would also point out that someone with a gun doesn’t have to run down the street towards you to take a hunk out of your leg.”
But the gun doesn’t have a mind of its own. It can’t just decide to attack.
“Congrats to all of the conservatives here that are falling for the bait that the liberal media is putting out there for you.”
Yes the liberal media makes pitbulls attack.
“[[[They just dont make good PC reading unless they are pit bull or rottweiler incidents}}}”
How often does a beagle kill somebody? How about an irish setter? Statistically this breed is very dangerous compared to other dogs. Just look to the fatality numbers (which the pit is tops in) and look to the size of the pit population.
At dogs that have the natural strength, aggressiveness and inbred tenacity to ignore any pain and kill adult humans. That pretty much limits it to pit bull terriers and maybe a half dozen other breeds.
“When are we going to outlaw these dogs?”
Much sooner than we will hold the owners responsible for the deeds of their “pets.”
I own one. I've also owned a home and a business with an excellent reputation in the community for 12 years now. Your statement is false; serves your purpose to throw around generalized slurs, I suppose, but it sure doesn't make you appear very bright.
It looks like it’s intently studying its prey to me.
How about we send ‘em all to China? They’d make some fine eating. Solve our problem and help with hunger. A win-win.
