CBS) HAWTHORNE, Calif. Two children menaced by pit bulls in Hawthorne were safe Friday, but a woman running from the dogs broke her leg and a squad car being driven to the scene collided with another vehicle, injuring an officer and a motorist, police said.
A report that two pit bulls were menacing a 16-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother in the 2900 block of 141st Place at El Segundo Boulevard and Prairie Avenue was received by Hawthorne police about 8 a.m., Hawthorne police Lt. Michael Ishii said.
An animal-control officer distracted the dogs with a chemical spray, and the children ran to safety, Ishii said.
No one was bitten, but a woman who ran from the dogs fell and broke her leg, and she was taken to a hospital, Ishii said.
Meanwhile, an officer driving to the scene crashed into another vehicle at El Segundo Boulevard and Prairie Avenue, he said.
Paramedics transported the officer and the other motorist for treatment of ''minor-to-moderate'' injuries, he said.
The dogs were returned to their owner, who lives in the neighborhood, and police issued a citation for violation of the leash law, Ishii said.
That's a real bright idea. Thanks for sharing.
>>Afghan hounds are renound for being fear biters ... but they are *pretty*.<<
Nor do Afghan hounds have a media-hyped reputation for being owned by rapper/thug types. Take away that particular association and, I’d bet, many of the pit bull haters wouldn’t have an issue with the breed.
No. I'm quite happy where I am, thank you. I will exercise my freedom to call for laws prohibiting these vile, vicious animals and if these laws are already on the books, making sure they are enforced.
This isn't a "liberal" position. It is a "I don't want my family mauled or killed" position.
Someone showed me a photo of their sweet pit bull pet.
It had eyes like a souless reptile--yet to the owner, it was her little sweetie.
I do want to add that we DO have to be wary of media hype.
1 of my main problems with banning generally, and specifically news on these items, is that the idiot reporting (and I include animal control) often don’t know a bull from an ox. Too many times I don’t trust reports on “pit bulls” (or any breed, but especially PBT) where there is no picture. Too many fools out there don’t know what they’re IDing. As 1 doggie poster here says, her Lab has been mistaken for a PBT. People are dopes.
The other bit is that we all know the media get hooked on fads - remember before 9/11? Not only did we have to hear endlessly about 1 news item - Chandra Levy - but the big general story that year was “SHARK ATTACKS”, and suddenly we’re all supposed to be scared into thinking this was an epidemic out of nowhere. It all stopped after 9/11 - a bigger story topped it.
So yes, 1 does have to worry about hype.
beady eyes spread far apart... I’ve always thought they looked mean and ugly even as pups.
Why the insult, FRiend?
Crouch End, CA: `Run with the Pit Bulls’
Pit bull fans are a free-fire zone, for me. I’m sure I’d like you in another context.
“The dogs were returned to their owner, who lives in the neighborhood, and police issued a citation for violation of the leash law, Ishii said.”
That’s it??? So, I guess threatening people isn’t enough. They are going to wait until the dogs actually attack before they really do something about them. No wonder people don’t trust government to protect them.
That wasn’t my quote, but I agree with what you said.
“What a little cutie! Just look at that face.”
After a year, just look at those teeth!
I used to feel the same way.
“I used to feel the same way.”
I’ve had a personal encounter with one of the little darlins. I still feel the same way.
By the way, why is one accused of hating dogs just because we don’t care for pit bulls? I have dogs. I love my dogs. I can make a solemn promise they will never attack and mangle a human being.
Well, I certainly don't accuse you of hating dogs. As far as personal encounters go, I've been mauled by a dog before. When I was a small child, I had my face torn up pretty badly by a medium-sized hound. I don't automatically trust any dog that I don't know.
Seriously, the only dog that ever bit me was a poodle.
At which breed to you stop once you start outlawing certain dogs? Many folks who don't know better would mistake an American bulldog for a pit ... do you want to outlaw them too? How about a Staffordshire terrier? What do you think of Mastifs? Then we could go on to Boxer dogs because they bear an amazing similarity to bulldogs? What about smaller breeds that are known to be biters? Where exactly are you and those like you going to stop?
Did he just bite or attack and maul?
