As the Lone Star State becomes a pariah [RETCH]
Star-Telegram ^ | 08/24/07 | TIMOTHY A. O'LEARY

Posted on 08/24/2007 8:56:18 AM PDT by Enchante

As a Texan living in Europe, I'm appalled by the state's execution Wednesday of Johnny Ray Conner.

Capital punishment is wrong. In the 27 countries of the European Union and in Switzerland, where I live, capital punishment is rightly banned as cruel and inhumane, an offense against human dignity and an ineffective deterrent to violent crime.

I applaud the European Union for urging Texas Gov. Rick Perry to spare Conner, who was the 400th person to be executed in the state since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. The European Union implored the governor to "exercise all powers vested in his office to halt all upcoming executions and to consider the introduction of a moratorium."

It's embarrassing enough to be from a state that sails so aggressively against the tide of civilization. But what really floored me was Perry's petty response. In effect, he told the European Union to mind its own business.

.....

What I dislike is Perry's insinuation that we Americans fought to make the country safe for institutionalized lynching. I doubt that the Founders would approve of the haphazard and unfair manner in which justice is administered in Texas.

.....

The death penalty is turning Texas into an international pariah. By speaking out, the European Union was doing Texas a favor.

Well, buddy, I'm appalled by whiny weasel liberals who continually use spurious assertions to defend murderers and smear those who would properly punish them.

Good thing you've fled Texas for Geneva -- why don't you stay there?

“As a Texan living in Europe, I’m appalled by the state’s execution Wednesday of Johnny Ray Conner.”

Sorry, but you are no Texan. Just stay there in the EU where you belong.

Born in Texas? Maybe. A Texan? Nah.

Its from the Ft Worth Startle-Gram. They probably placed an ad in their own classifieds for just such a person to write just such an article.

This person should ask their Muslim rulers in Europe about beheadings. When the muslims take over Europe, they’ll be singing a different tune.

Johnny Ray Conner walked into a conveniene store and put a 32 caliber pistol in the face of a female clerk. A customer walked in during his holdup attempt and Conner turned and shot the man. The bullet travelled through his arm and into his chest. He then turned back to the female clerk and shot her twice in the face, killing her. The customer lived to identify Conner as the gunman.

I'm having trouble working up much sympathy for Johnny Ray Conner.

As a native NY’er who moved to TX 7 yrs ago, I say this man is no Texan.

Some of us get here as quick as we can. This weasel jetted for Europe. Good trade off!

I would agree. They would have hung his sorry butt 15 minutes after the verdict of guilty...that is if the citizen did get to him first.

We should listen to him. This is no ordinary Texan, he's a Texan Living In Europe. Can you feel the weight of moral authority there?

Probably some parasite in the water. Nothing a decent purgative wouldn't cure.

As if Texas cares whether it is an “international pariah.” NOT. Don’t mess with Texas. Don’t commit murders in Texas and you won’t have anything to worry about. If this dim bulb is so embarrassed, he should start telling people he is from New Jersey.

The Founders of the Republic of Texas were more than comfortable with capital punishment.

They also urinated while standing, unlike Mr. O'Leary.

Capital punishment is wrong.

Well, I guess that settles it.

What do you think he feels about ending the life of an innocent, productive person?

Yup. Sounds more like a Euroweenie who happened to emerge IN Texas, not a Texan. (Guy probably grew up somewhere else entirely, then got a 2-year MSW at UTA and now labels himself a “Texan” to leverage the implication therein of Western toughness, of non-liberal-ness, etc.)
