High Temperatures Cut Swath Across US

High temps cut swath across U.S.

MONTGOMERY, Ala., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- High temperatures cut a swath across the United States Thursday from the deep South to Ohio.

In Alabama, where temperatures have topped 100 degrees for 14 days so far in August, at least 12 deaths have been blamed on the heat, the Montgomery Advertiser reported.

"Because of the extreme heat Alabama is still suffering from, I am afraid that we will have even more heat-related deaths reported to us before the state cools down this fall," Dr. Jim McVay of the Alabama Public Health Service said.

Six of the deaths have been investigated by the state, all involving people found in their homes, including five without air conditioning. At least 352 people have been treated at hospitals for heat-related illness.

Indianapolis declared an extreme heat emergency, converting community centers into cooling centers, the Indianapolis Star reported. The school district was considering closing schools early on Friday.

Cincinnati closed schools on Thursday and planned to do so again on Friday. Janet Walsh, a school district spokeswoman, told the Cincinnati Enquirer that the closing was the first for high temperatures in at least 10 years.

That’s because it’s a UPI story, which is more like an “investigative paragraph”... an AP story will blame Bush for the origins of the Sun...

I guess I’m not part of the swath. My thermometer said 60 at 5 this afternoon.

We’ve had nearly a week of the 60’s here in the Philly area. Coldest week in August I can ever remember.

Same here I hope it doesn’t portend worse for this winter.

Coldest week in August I can ever remember.

That's what the folks around here in NY are telling me, too. With all the clouds and rain, it reminds me of the Pacific Northwest that I left behind!

Or in Tennessee. I’ve seen too many guys even younger than I seem to just drop over dead from this heat. I had a heart attack back in March so at least I have some warning that I’m at risk. If not for that, I’d most likely be out in it like always.

Better get used to it. I understand Rove is the only one that knows how to run the weather machine.

Just today I drove from eastern Kentucky up to Chicago. The 100 degree heat persisted all the way up to Indy, and only gradually diminished until I hit northern Indiana where I met the cloud cover associated with the persistent thunderstorms across the Great Lakes region. There the temperature dropped to around 80 or less. The Chicago area had a violent series of storms this afternoon, which I heard about on WLS 890 AM as I drove through Indy. The storms persisted as I arrived in ChiTown, and I drove through a heavy downpour on I294. Rain persists off and on this evening in the Western Burbs.

This all seems to be due to a stubborn high pressure system over the Southeast. Global warming? ... It’s tempting to believe that something is different, but from a forensic point of view it can’t be said that any of this was specifically predicted, and we all know that there are always anomalies, and they are always popularly attributed to one cause or another with little basis.

I was listening to an AM station out of Louisville which was covering the Kentucky State Fair. The extreme heat was often mentioned, but not in the hysterical manner we have come to associate with CNN and the Weather Channel. It was pretty much taken in stride, and in good humor.
