A submarine-like vessel filled with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cocaine was seized off the Guatemalan coast, U.S. officials said.
Four suspected smugglers were operating the self-propelled, semi-submersible vessel when it was located and seized on Sunday evening by officials from the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard, the Border Patrol said in a news release Wednesday.
When the suspects realized they had been spotted by drug-surveillance aircraft patrolling the eastern Pacific, they scuttled the vessel but were unable to escape.
Coast Guard officials, guided by the reconnaissance plane, intercepted the vessel and detained the reputed smugglers, who were transporting approximately 5.5 tons of cocaine worth $352 million, the Border Patrol said.
Several drug-carrying submarines operated by Colombian drug cartels have been discovered in recent years.

No other enterprise in the world has that kind of a profit margin. Oh, I don't know about that. Have you seen the markup on bottled water lately? Something I buy at the tap for 3.81 per thousand gallons goes for about 2.00 per 12oz the last I looked. Not bad.

For the same money as they spent on that sub, they could have bought a UAV.
My idea for smuggling was to attach the product to the bottom of a ship with a magnet or latch or something and if boarded or challenged, just let the contraband fall to the bottom of the ocean.

I find myself wondering what the cartel regretted the loss of more...the drugs or the submarine?...Obviously 352 million will cover a lot of ship, but can it be all that easy to acquire “replacement” subs “on the down low”?

The longest war(so far) since the The Hundred Years' War.
It's obviously working. We have more drug offenders in US jails than the entire European prison population. The more of our citizens we can imprison, the greater the success. Didn't you get the DEA memo on this?

Um, how do the Border Patrol, Navy and Coast Guard have any power or jurisdiction "Off the Guatemalan coast" ???

Good question, but the product is probably easier to replace then the sub. Who knows, though, it could be a diversion for the real 50 ton shipment. When you are talking that kind of money, you probably have some smart people working on the process.

We have treaties with most SA countries that allow us to do that. In Guatemala's case, we probably installed the government after we went and got Noriega.

Didn't you get the DEA memo on this? You know, my e-mail has been hit-n-miss lately. Got to do something about that. LOL!

They’re on the high seas. Lots of interdictions are done there and in the Caribbean.

So if the seizures get bigger and bigger every year, that means the drug war is working, right?Yup.

An interdiction on the high seas is piracy. So, you think the United States Coast Guard engages in piracy?
