Straw poll offers Hunter opportunity to stand out

GRAPEVINE -- The good news for U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter is that he should get plenty of exposure during the Texas Republican Straw Poll during the Labor Day weekend.

The bad news is that on Wednesday afternoon, only one newspaper reporter and one TV news crew showed up for his news conference at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center.

But the California Republican was all smiles. He was courteous when members of Gaylord security staff showed up and mentioned that they had learned about Hunter's news conference on the Internet. Politely but firmly, they told him that they expected to be notified of future events.

Hunter was eager to talk about the 2006 legislation he co-authored that requires the construction of 700 miles of fencing along the Texas-Mexico border. The Department of Homeland Security is not moving fast enough to build the fence, he said, and he is trying to put pressure on President Bush.

"Today, I am giving them an 'F' for execution on the border fence," said Hunter, whose House district in San Diego County extends almost to the Mexican border.

Hunter pledged to have the entire border fenced within six months of taking office, if he is elected president.

On Aug. 11, Hunter finished ninth out of 11 candidates in the Iowa straw poll. But he might fare better in the Texas straw poll, to be conducted in Fort Worth on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, because so far, only he, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee are scheduled to attend.

"I respect the views of Texans," Hunter said. "I think this is a great event."

Hunter, 58, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, has two bedrock issues: support for the military (he's an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and has a son serving in Iraq) and opposition to illegal immigration.

He has been in Texas for six days making campaign stops around the state, but he has been spending most of his time in North Texas.

He said he's returning to San Diego on Friday to help his son's campaign for Congress. The younger Hunter -- Duncan Duane Hunter, a Marine reservist on active duty -- is running for the House seat that his father will vacate after almost 30 years.

The elder Hunter plans to be back in Texas next week to prepare for the straw poll.

"I told my son he's ahead of me in the polls in Texas," Hunter said. "They like him. I told him he needs to stay for another tour because he's going up in the polls."

Low profiles like Hunter's are common for candidates without huge money-raising machines, said Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University.

"They have raised very little money, which means they have very slim organization on the ground, and no one to do preparatory visits," Jillson said. "All they can do is fly in and hope they can have a small crowd."

Hunter is finding ways to stretch his shoestring budget.

When he is in North Texas, he said, he stays with family in Hurst.

I don;t approve of state sponsored gamabling. In the past I took a libertarian view of it, but then saw the empty promises in Atlantic City New Jersey. Gambling benefits the mob - one way or the other. Its part of their lifeblood.

Duncan Hunter is as close to perfect on political philosphy as any human can come.

His support in Iowa will continue to grow, but Ames is a unique animal.

Libertarians. We have a large tribe of them in the West Sound. They screw up more elections than King County. Ask Slade Gorton and Rick White about their influence.

This writer must be on his first assignment. Corrections mong the errors he reported are: Rep Hunter, 60; former chair, now ranking member of the ASC; Duncan Duane, serving in Afghanistan, his 3rd deployment in the M.E.; his father will vacate his seat in Congress after 27 year.
Very sloppy reporting.

As for advance notices, I hope Rep. Hunter’s PR people know about press releases, and that they can be sent to talk show hosts as well as newspapers.

I hope all newspapers soon bite the dust because of their inability to serve the people. Instead they, like Pravda, serve only their Commie owners.

Border Fence Update

The Secure Fence Act written by Congressman Duncan Hunter, Presidential Candidate 2008, would extend THIS "San Diego Primary Fence" throughout our southern border states.

Dragon Hunter

BTW, I've not seen any comments from Duncan Hunter on gambling yet. Where did you see that?

You’re telling me?

I’ve lived here all my life. The fact that Utah is Mormon and supporting flipper is certainly not news. The fact that the overwhelmingly conservative voters of this State of supporting a left-leaning RINO is a BIG surprise.

Guess who came in second in our straw-poll. ...Ron Paul! What a very strange State. You would think that the conservatives would actually act like conservatives and back a good, honest, family-man, military veteran like Hunter. That they don’t even know who he is shows me just how closed minded many of them are.

“...That they don’t even know who he is shows me just how closed minded many of them are...”

First and foremost Utah has been conquered by Hollywood culture and shallowness just like Ohio, Alabama, et al. Republican primary voters are a bit more in tune but it is a matter of degrees and not often a great quantum leap.

Grapevine, Texas is where Clyde Barrow and his pals murdered two young Texas motorcycle patrolmen. That awakened to State Police enough to put one of their own men on Frank Hamer’s team. Manny Gault, Hamer, and four other stalwart lawmen were to end Bonnie and Clyde’s lives within two months.

In such a Texas place Hunter needs to pour it on: border fence, pro gun, pro American, give ‘em Hell, moratorium on legal immigration from certain countries, more pro gun, and more pro gun. And he should mention Frank Hamer’s name at every speaking engagement too just to be respectful.

A thousand will cost you, but you call La Mesa at 619-463-3896, see what you can work out.

They just sent me a bunch when I requested bumper stickers, pins and brochures with a $100 contribution. It cost them nearly $9.00 to send them priority, so I sent them another $100.00.

The credit card companies skim off 5%, so to be sure the campaign gets 100% of your contribution, write your most generous check to: Hunter for President, and send it to:

Go Hunter 08
9340 Fuerte Drive, Suite 302
La Mesa, CA 91941-4164

That should work. Thank you very much! :)

That is the ticket. Hunter needs some dough. I sent in humble contribution. I hope some more Freepers will put a touch of their wallet where their mouth is.

I read Hunters response to gambling, but can’t find it now. I thought it was on the thread where he came to join us.

That’s a good one to get Hunters views.

A couple FReepers vs 40 Ron Paul refer smoking slackers isn't even a contest.

Still, I would have liked to have been there, if only to see just how far out of touch the Pierce County GOP has become.

What Hunter needs the most is exposure- Something we can give him, as even a grassroots internet sweep would do a lot to give him recognition.

We need to start FReeping, dang it. Even if FR is not in consensus, at the least we could effect a sea-change against RudyMcRomney in the polls- and maybe buy some sunlight for Duncan Hunter while we're at it.

What can we do to bring FR to bear despite the internecine battles going on here?

Non-Republicans at a Republican event? Are you saying Ron Paul has the most crossover appeal?

Don’t worry about RP winning that Pierce county straw poll, the big one is the Texas straw poll coming up Sept 1, and ONLY people who have previously been GOP delegates can vote in it. It will not matter how much appeal a candidate has outside the party in that one.
