Latest Polls Show Giuliani and Even Fred Thompson Beating Clinton
Intellectual Conservative ^ | August 19, 2007 | Rachel Alexander

The presidential election is still over a year away, and Republican approval ratings are lower than ever with the President's approval rating averaging 32.9%, but the latest polls are already beginning to show Giuliani beating Hillary in hypothetical matchups in the general presidential election. According to key campaign website realclearpolitics.com, two out of the five most recent major polls have Giuliani beating Hillary, and one has Fred Thompson beating Hillary. A Battleground poll taken in the middle of July shows Giuliani beating Hillary by 6 points, and a Rasmussen poll taken at the end of July has Giuliani winning by 1 point. Another Rasmussen poll shows Thompson beating Hillary by 1 point. Pundits like Dick Morris have been saying all along that Hillary can't win because her negatives are too high - around 44% in most polls.

In hypothetical matchups between Obama and Giuliani, Obama fares better than Hillary, with Giuliani losing every hypothetical except for one tie. However, there are fewer and fewer people who believe Obama can beat Hillary in the Democrat primary, and he's trailing Hillary by double digits in every poll. A recent Newsweek poll shows him trailing by 21 points. Obama's inexperienced gaffes the last couple of weeks over foreign policy set him back considerably; for the Democrat party machine, it's hard to get excited about a candidate who makes you look stupid for supporting him. Plus any Democrat would have a difficult time fighting the Bill Factor - Bill Clinton was the last most powerful man in the world, and one of the best-loved Democrats; with Bill campaigning for Hillary and working everyone from the base to the wealthy contributors, any Democrat is going to have a difficult time counteracting that. Obama is a nice distraction from the Clinton political machine because he's a fresh-faced opposite of Hillary, but he's not a realistic solid candidate; Democrats just have to picture him debating the quick and brilliant Rudy Giuliani to realize he'd lose big in a general election.

If the momentum continues this way, we're headed for a Giuliani-Hillary presidential race, and certain victory for Republicans because of Hillary's high negatives. Republicans who revere Ronald Reagan remember the more recent Clinton years even better, and will never forget Whitewater, Hillarycare, Monica Lewinsky, and the most corrupt administration ever.

Rudy Giuliani has stood against and continues to stand against everything the conservative movement in this country stands for.

Everything? You mean like lower taxes, conservative judges, a strong military, a crackdown on criminals...

I'm sure that 8 years of the bitch will make you feel vindicated that you sat out the election because the pubbie candidate wasn't "pure" enough for your high standards. You stated your "opinion" not logic based on facts, as the "facts" that you point to are not really facts, kinda like the demonRATs.

Everything?

Yes. Everything.

You mean like lower taxes

I don't believe for one second that he'd lower any taxes.

conservative judges

I don't believe for one second that he'd appoint any conservative judges. There is no evidence to support that he would either. In fact, there's plenty to the contrary.

a strong military

For use against whom? Rudy Giuliani has shown every sign of being everything that the left likes to fantasize that Bush is.

I'm sure that 8 years of the bitch will make you feel vindicated that you sat out the election because the pubbie candidate wasn't "pure" enough for your high standards.

Such arguments are so intellectually vapid. You're actually contending that if I don't vote for Rudy and tell you now that I won't that I'll somehow be responsible for Hillary getting elected? How silly.

I can make an equally silly argument and tell you that if you insist on voting for Rudy in the primaries and force me to have only those two choices, YOU are therefore responsible for electing Hillary Clinton. How bout that? I hope you're happy with the pain and suffering that you have caused with your possible future actions in this regard.

You stated your "opinion" not logic based on facts, as the "facts" that you point to are not really facts, kinda like the demonRATs.

I'm sorry. I didn't realize we were talking over your head here. I assumed that you would be able to carry on a discussion somewhat above the level of your average preschooler on this particular subject. My mistake. You know what they say about assumptions...

All any of us are doing is stating our opinions about things, yourself included. It just so happens that your opinion is on par with that of an under educated five year old. Unfortunately, I can't help you with that.

One day the democratic luns will wake up and remember that the only thing they liked about Bill Clinton is that he won the presidency. If Hillary can't win, then they will bail on her.

For Obama to win the nomination, he needs to make it absolutely clear he will not be Hillary's VP! The camp was moving there 2 weeks ago but got diverted to cover his recent gaffs.

If Obama continues to tank, look out Algore.

The only reason Newt will enter the race if he believes Hillary will win the democRATic nomination. Her negatives are as high as his so he believe he can beat her. He will only get the Republican nomination if Thompson does not get off the ground.

“Would you swallow hard and vote for Romney?”

Nope, I won’t ever again vote for a mormon. Made that mistake once and lived to regret it.

Check the daily Fred Thread. He will be in before then because he already has a speaking date as a candidate just a few days after that.

“Rudy is not my choice, but if he wins the pubbie nomination, and I am faced with Rudy or the beast, I cannot stand by and let kankles become the President of the United States. It makes no sense.”

It makes no sense to let Rooty(or Mitt for that matter) get the nomination. I wont vote for anti-gun and I don’t know anyone that will vote for them.

One thing I hate about the Perpetual Presidential Beauty Contest, at least this time around, is that it causes a lot of people to ignore another effort that, domestically, is at least as important as electing a Republican President, and that's electing a conservative Congress.

I don't care how many good ideas a Republican President has, it won't amount to anything if he inherits a Democrat or business-as-usual-Republican Congress.

If the nominee really wants to show that he's serious about leading the country and not just winning an election, he could do worse than to push a reform-minded campaign that encompasses the entire ticket, top to bottom. Something like the Contract in 1994, except including both chambers of Congress and the Presidential election. Judging by both the President's and Congress's approval ratings, the voters might just be ready for it.

Pie in the sky, I know. We'll be lucky just to avoid another "local issues" campaign like what worked so well last year.

We rented the movie “Shooter” over the weekend, which showed a Machiavellian device which forces the wearer to shoot himself.

All I could think of was Vince Foster.

"Pundits like Dick Morris have been saying all along ..."

Don't get excited over anything he says. Dick Morris has an abysmal record when it comes to calling elections. I can't understand why Fox News still has him on as a Fox News Contributor.

All of this stuff will be “revived” if she gets the nomination. Hillary has sooooooooooooo much campaign fodder to provide for the GOP.

That’s another reason why we don’t need someone with the baggage that Rudy Julie Annie and Newt Gingrich have. We need someone who CAN throw stones because they are NOT living in a glass house.

She is the easiest candidate to beat.

I hope you're right but I NEVER underestimate the Clintonistas. They will do whatever they have to do to win.

I think after the ‘08 Election, it’s going to be time to organize “The American Conservative Party”.

“I think after the ‘08 Election, it’s going to be time to organize “The American Conservative Party”.”

That is where my thinking is taking me also. If Rudy gets the “nod” then that is the signal to start a new party. I’m not even sure what defines a Republican anymore. It can’t be the platform because too many Noreasters with and (R) behind their names don’t subscribe.
