The presidential election is still over a year away, and Republican approval ratings are lower than ever with the President's approval rating averaging 32.9%, but the latest polls are already beginning to show Giuliani beating Hillary in hypothetical matchups in the general presidential election. According to key campaign website realclearpolitics.com, two out of the five most recent major polls have Giuliani beating Hillary, and one has Fred Thompson beating Hillary. A Battleground poll taken in the middle of July shows Giuliani beating Hillary by 6 points, and a Rasmussen poll taken at the end of July has Giuliani winning by 1 point. Another Rasmussen poll shows Thompson beating Hillary by 1 point. Pundits like Dick Morris have been saying all along that Hillary can't win because her negatives are too high - around 44% in most polls.
In hypothetical matchups between Obama and Giuliani, Obama fares better than Hillary, with Giuliani losing every hypothetical except for one tie. However, there are fewer and fewer people who believe Obama can beat Hillary in the Democrat primary, and he's trailing Hillary by double digits in every poll. A recent Newsweek poll shows him trailing by 21 points. Obama's inexperienced gaffes the last couple of weeks over foreign policy set him back considerably; for the Democrat party machine, it's hard to get excited about a candidate who makes you look stupid for supporting him. Plus any Democrat would have a difficult time fighting the Bill Factor - Bill Clinton was the last most powerful man in the world, and one of the best-loved Democrats; with Bill campaigning for Hillary and working everyone from the base to the wealthy contributors, any Democrat is going to have a difficult time counteracting that. Obama is a nice distraction from the Clinton political machine because he's a fresh-faced opposite of Hillary, but he's not a realistic solid candidate; Democrats just have to picture him debating the quick and brilliant Rudy Giuliani to realize he'd lose big in a general election.
If the momentum continues this way, we're headed for a Giuliani-Hillary presidential race, and certain victory for Republicans because of Hillary's high negatives. Republicans who revere Ronald Reagan remember the more recent Clinton years even better, and will never forget Whitewater, Hillarycare, Monica Lewinsky, and the most corrupt administration ever.
By not listening to the media, we lose? Wha--?
I want Hilary to win the democratic primaries. She is the easiest candidate to beat. A lot of her own party can’t stand her. More importantly swing voters will be scared away and she will do more than anything else could to drive out Republican voters.
Never say never.
Look on the bright side....
Anyone that can balance on two pillars of cankle while head bobbing and simultaneously avoiding eye contact can't be that bad.
It’s like Gresham’s Law; only in this case bad reporting is driving out good reporting.
The overuse of polls, in order to create a “horse race” is just plain bad reporting. It’s beyond slothful and moronic — it allows anyone to “report” on an election, regardless of how little they know about the issues. “Good reporting” would, at a minimum, have something to say about the issues, or the character and abilities of the candidates. (Good reporting would also be “fair and balanced” — but, that’s way too much to hope for any more.)
...but how did her fish sticks turn out?
I have no trouble ignoring the news these days because the "news" is no such thing. I simply read my last "story" that was actually reporting some poll. That's not news, that's an analysis of an imperfect poll of a few people, and indicative of nothing (I've known two people who made their living at polling and was long ago completely disillusioned about their usefullness).
If The News were actual reporting of facts, I'd be back in my News Junkie mode. I watched the news CONSTANTLY for years, and then I learned a little more about it, and BOOM. How many times do I have to hear about some stupid poll in the year leading up to an election?

I like your enthusiasm.
Don’t any of you read doug from upland’s posts? It is a factor that the press is ignoring and many of them know about it.
Sounds from other polls that Giuliani’s momentum is going down (not up) with Republicans, and that Hillary’s momentum is going down with the general electorate.
Would you swallow hard and vote for Romney?
I’ve been in close physical proximity to Rudy. Only guy I’ve sensed so much arrogant selflove coming out of is Pete Rose...
He announces Jan 28, then sweeps MegaTuesday - don't you love it when a plan comes together?
“That is EXACTLY how we lose.”
As bad as it is, we must be vigilant.
We scheduled a Caribbean cruise right for after the 2000 election, and it was just horrible not knowing who won! Those of us who were pubbies met in furtive bunches and, in whispers, asked anybody with a newspaper what was happening, while a Florida election official and her hubby (obviously Democrats) with whom we shared a lunch bemoaned loudly that she couldn’t be there to “help” and wasn’t it “too bad” that Clinton couldn’t run for a third term. Aiyee! My hubby probably had gouge marks in his leg from my fingernails so that I could control myself from screaming at them, LOL!
I dont think folks take statements like mine in ernest, but I wont back down. I cannot support Guilani, even if it means a Clinton victory.
We take you in "earnest" {even if you can't be bothered using spell checker} but it just makes you as illogical as a demonRAT.
You prefer the bitch to Rudy and yet claim to be conservative. Can't be supported with logic.
Rudy is not my choice, but if he wins the pubbie nomination, and I am faced with Rudy or the beast, I cannot stand by and let kankles become the President of the United States. It makes no sense.
It most certainly can be supported with logic.
Rudy Giuliani has stood against and continues to stand against everything the conservative movement in this country stands for. The Republican party is the only right of center party in this country. Nominating Rudy Giuliani to be the de facto head of that party would bring about the destruction of the Republican party and the conservative movement. It would give us two left of center parties in this country, which is unacceptable to me.
Electing Rudy Giuliani to win this battle is winning a battle to lose a war. That’s just dumb. I’d rather lose in the short term and still have a fighting force to regroup and come back another day.
If that is what people wish to do, I can’t stop it. I can, however, refuse to take part in it.
