Decisions Upend Judges' Lives (Judge George Greer at AMA Annual Meeting)
CAL Law ^ | August 13, 2007 | Mike McKee

Posted on 08/19/2007 3:41:17 AM PDT by amdgmary

More than two years after enraging right-wing groups by ordering Terry Schiavo's feeding tube removed, George Greer still peers over his shoulder nervously at times.

In fact, the Florida judge told a rapt audience Friday at the American Bar Association's annual meeting, he even used an alias when he registered at his San Francisco hotel on this trip.

Two years ago, he said, someone in the Bay Area threatened to kill him over his decision to end life support for the brain-damaged Schiavo. And even though that person was prosecuted and jailed, Greer said, he's taking no chances.

"It is a little unnerving," he said. "I still can't see a strange car come down my street without wondering [who's behind the steering wheel]."

Greer talked about he and his wife had to be placed under 24-hour watch after Operation Rescue posted their home address and phone number on its Web site. All of their mail was checked by authorities and on one occasion dead flowers were delivered to their condominium with a note reading, "No Food, No Water" — a reference to Schiavo.

"It got to the point," Greer said, "that we felt a little trapped in our apartment."

The problem can always be traced to a lack of salt and light.

I have tried to figure out his motivation. Sadism for sure. He enjoys causing pain to others. He leaves the impression of being a sociopath. There might also be greed, such as kickback or other favors from Michael. No, he was not in a legal straight jacket since some of his rulings, such as excusing Michael from having to give a deposition, were outrageous.

BTW, some of the defenders of Terri have been non Christians, such as Martin Katz who happens to be Jewish. He stated, "We . . . have not managed, for whatever reason, to permit a mother, deluded or not, to put water onto the lips of her dying child, brain dead or not. . . . We, as a people, have so shamed ourselves, that we cannot look Mary Schindler . . . in the eye and give her one good reason why WE did not allow her to give water to her dying child. . ."

I don’t believe in cheap forgiveness, especially as it concerns public policy.

Well then keep the war drums of hate beating as loudly as you can, just don't complain when someone points out that are keeping the war drums of hate beating.

I think it is sad.

Public policy? I think everyone in Terri family was / is a nut. When we are in uncharted areas, where the brain has stopped and the body is on auto pilot, it is a private mater for the family to decide. I don't see it as much as causing death, but rather admitting that it has all ready occurred. All the courts could do is decide it is a family decision. In this case a nut made the choice. I think it is the best policy to leave such decisions to the family. Maybe the law should be changed so that parents can trump a husband, or the children can trump a Wife over their father. Maybe things are best when a Husband decides for the Wife and the Wife decides for the Husband, and parents chooses for their unmarried children. I would rather have the family decide than a government worker.

“A priest speaking on EWTN said that he was present at her death, and that her husband lied about it being a peaceful death. He said it was horrible.”

I wish more people knew how horrible dehydrating a person who is not dying, is, so they won’t allow medical people to talk them into doing this to their loved oes.

Obviously, you don’t know the Schindlers, or have much of an awareness of the meaning of the word “inalienable” in our founding documents.

When the husband is a Michael Schiavo who has a live-in mistress and two illegitimate children and has vested interest in have the wife die, someone else should step in to protect the interests of the wife. Furthermore, he tried to make Terri's life as miserable as possible in case she felt anything. And not letting her parents to visit her and wanting to keep her grave hidden from them speaks for itself.

You calling everyone in Terri's family reveals more about you than them.

If he feels he has to look over his shoulder now, wonder how he will feel when he has to face our Maker head on and explain his actions? If I were in his shoes I would be much more afraid of judgement day than of anything that might happen in the meantime.

I read an article the other day about MS being in trouble for not filing proper forms for money he has gathered for political action and candidates he supports. MS never bothered to file the proper forms in regards to Teri’s guardianship and Greer looked the other way. I realize there is a whole laundry list of actions Greer took on behalf of MS that were immoral and illegal, but the paperwork legalities was the most blatant legal thing for a judge to overlook. When I read about the paperwork issues, I knew no matter what evidence or support Teri had, judge Greer was going to side with MS on every issue.

Here's a novel idea. How about we all decide as a society that we're not going to murder anyone? We don't let family members, government workers, or anyone else decide when and how someone should be murdered. And anyone who breaks that rule is removed from society.

It was a three ring circus, and I'm not intrested in who was sleeping with who, or whatever. It makes no diffrence to me.

If you think it reflects on me, come right out and say it in the open. Say exactly how it reflects on me.

The greatest thing to come out of this episode is the unwillingness of Christians to forgive Greer. I am sure God wants nothing to do with him. I doubt Jesus would even bother trying to talk God into saving him.

Wow! Why such a low opinion of Christians, God and Jesus?

Great, how much brain activity must cease before we say someone had passed away? I have no idea. It has to be a case by case decision made by each family.

Enough that they actually have passed away, and aren't just disabled to the point of making you uncomfortable.

It is not my opinion, I was just restating what those who hate Judge Greer are saying. Read the bad things they say about the Judge and you may understand what I was saying.

Sounds fair enough to me. I tell my wife to shoot me if I ever break my leg. :)

Just a bit of info for anyone who is new here which only scratches the surface:

Michael Schiavo is a sadist who euthanized Terri’s two cats, and far worse, admitted on the Larry King show that he had his parents starved to death when they were sick with cancer, etc., and abused Terri before the collapse, and continues to abuse her. He wouldn’t allow her to have therapy to talk (she could say a few words), he wouldn’t allow her to have therapy to swallow better (she COULD swallow soft foods), he turned her family’s pictures around in her room, wouldn’t allow her to go outside for some fresh air, wouldn’t allow sunlight in her room, wouldn’t allow her see the cute little dogs that are brought around to cheer patients, wouldn’t allow her teeth to be brushed, etc.

Bump to post #50.

Note how you can see out of the window.

When Terri was alive, she could not see out of the window, because Michael made sure the drapes were closed.

A very cruel man is Michael.
