Graham: Social Security cards should be revamped
Associated Press ^ | 08/08/2007 | Seanna Adcox

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham said Tuesday he will introduce legislation to replace all paper Social Security cards with plastic biometric cards that can't be duplicated, so employers can be certain of the legal status of their workers.

The South Carolina Republican said Congress must address the out-of-control illegal immigration problem, and last month's defeat of comprehensive immigration reform in the Senate means the problem must be tackled piecemeal.

I find it interesting that Lindsey Graham wants to impose a National Identification card on the American Citizens but he voted against an ammendment to fully enforce the US Visit Act which places the need for identification of visitors in this country at the border. Graham is attempting to piece meal his globalization agenda and having a National Identification card does nothing to prevent the invasion of illegal immigrants that we continue to have. We need to fully secure the border by building the 854 miles of fence already provided in the Security fence Act, modify our visa laws to be more restrictive, reject Amnesty, empower and require that all Federal, State and Local law enforcement officiers fully enforce current immigration law, and roll back all efforts to build a globalized nation through unification efforts (piece meal) such as softening the border requirements between Mexico, Central American countries, Canada and the United States.

I am running for U.S. Senate to replace Lindsey Graham and represent the people of South Carolina. I encourage you to visit my campaign site http://www.carnesforsenate.com/ and get to know where I stand on the issues. We need a consistent conservative senator to represent South Carolina and I look forward to your support.

Smoke and mirrors. If this "new improved" SS card is issued, one hour later some guy will have software on the market that will replicate "biometric cards that can't be duplicated" (if it is not already out there).

A few years ago when holographic cards were the rage, some Swedish outfit had software to create them. Human ingenuity will win out every time.

We should do away with Social Security altogether. Barring that if government is going to force you to participate, they should give you the option of linking your race to your social security number.

That was my immediate thought as well. Someone always claims something to be foolproof and before long someone who isn’t a fool comes along and proves it can be duplicated anyway.

I can’t help but believe that the time has come for a secure way to identify CITIZENS of the United States. Not only are there folks from Mexico here for jobs, but who is here that intends to do us harm. We, the citizens of the US, need some way to establish our identity beyond question.

Anything proposed by Lindsey Graham should be discarded, however attractive it sounds.

That which originates in a black deed will blossom in a foul manner...and all Lindsey Graham's deeds are black.

Change the privacy restrictions so the SSA can provide the names and addresses of employers getting employer "no match" letters.

There are already ways to match SSNs, names, and addresses to the SSA master files, one-by-one on-line or batch overnight.

Gramnesty, you dumb ass, no need for shiny new cards that go "PING!"

People, these folks with zero credentials and zero experience are almost certainly plants by Graham.

You SC Freepers MUST find an SC Congressman or a state legislator who has some fundraising experience, knows specifically and explicitly how to run a campaign, has debated major political figures on TV before and is just generally a credible opponent to challenge Graham in the primary.

These gentlemen who are without these accumulated skills that are popping up here on FR are not helpful and are likely orchestrated by Graham.

Find A Credible Opponent For Graham! You can start with simply verifying that the man or woman has a college degree, and preferably a graduate degree. Then ensure he has run a campaign before. If the person passes those two tests, then you have a horse race. Not until.

The cards would also have to be reissued periodically depending on the kind of biometric data entered.

Why? My dad advised me to get a SS # for my daughter soon after she was born. He was a stock broker and wanted investment accounts for her. Isn’t baby biometric data valuable throughout life?

The Asian suppliers of the components used to manufacture biometric cards will supply you with all needed electronics and blank cards for a reasonable price, but it can not be delivered to the US.

Which means future illegal aliens will have to buy their falsified SS cards before they enter the US.

If the SS followed something similar to the Credit Card industry security policy PCI, most of theproblems would disappear.

Agreed..., BUT..., most forged SS cards are easily printed ANYWHERE by very unsophisticated forgers! At least the price for forgeries will rise AND, the number of counterfeiting operations to track down will diminish exponentially!

Current staged biometrics for passports, visas etc. can contain facial recognition, fingerprint recognition, and iris scans. The U.S. version of the biometric passport (which is also referred to as an "Electronic Passport") will only have digital imaging placed onto the contactless chip, as opposed to the European version. However, the chip used in the U.S. passport will be large enough (64 kilobytes) to allow it to contain additional biometric identifiers should the need arise in the future.

According to the SSA, "It is a good idea to apply for a number at the hospital when you apply for your baby’s birth certificate. The state agency that issues birth certificates will share your child’s information with us, and we will mail the Social Security card to you."

Question: If Social Security is a program for the elderly or disabled, why would my new baby need a Social Security number?

Answer: Social Security is not just a program for the elderly and disabled. Survivors of deceased workers and the families of retired or disabled workers also qualify for benefits. In fact, about 4 million children are currently receiving such benefits and 9 out of 10 would be eligible to receive benefits if a parent retires, becomes disabled, or dies. They need a Social Security number (SSN) before they can receive benefits. The SSN is also needed for reasons not connected with Social Security benefits. For example, to be claimed as a dependent on a tax return, to open a bank account, or buy Savings Bonds. Also, an SSN is necessary for your child to be eligible for some social services and benefits, such as Temporary Assistance to Families (TANF), Food Stamps and Medicaid.
