Financial pressures force Snow departure

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON - White House press secretary Tony Snow said Friday he'll leave sometime before the end of the Bush presidency because of financial pressures.

He declined to say when he would depart, but that, "I'm going to stay as long as I can."

The 52-year-old Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000 as an assistant to the president but made considerably more as a conservative pundit and syndicated talk-show host on Fox News Radio. He was named press secretary on April 26, 2006.

The White House has been shaken by the resignations of some of President Bush's closest aides. Political strategist Karl Rove announced Monday that he would leave at the end of the month. Longtime Bush adviser Dan Bartlett left earlier this year and Andrew Card left earlier as Bush's chief of staff.

Bush's term ends on Jan. 20, 2009.

"I will not be able to make it to the end of this administration, just financially," Snow said. "This job has been such a pleasant surprise in how much I like it. I love it."

Snow has been undergoing chemotherapy after doctors discovered a recurrence of colon cancer in March. He said the last of eight scheduled chemotherapy treatments would be on Friday. On Monday he will have a CAT scan to evaluate his progress.

>>I liked him better as a talk show host. At least i felt like his opinions were his own.<<

Now someone has pointed out that he mentioned financial problems when he took the job so maybe I was wrong.

My gut feeling has been that he has been called on to support policies he did not agree with.

He said all of his dark hair fell out due to the Chemo.

Today is his last one!

Yay!

He was rumored to be earning a 7 figure paycheck from Fox and his old radio program.

I think is was way up there, probably well over a million a year, he is really well off, and there are people here that act if he was living from pay check to pay check.

No matter what kind of insurance he has, the expense for cancer and all the tests that go on is massive.

There may be an opening in the next months for a radio or TV gig and may want to jump now than never.

As far as 168K, if he lived here in San Diego and wanted to buy a home, his wife would have to work also as he wouldn’t qualify.

One reason I rent a 1 bdrm apt.

>>If you knew you had a 75% probability of being dead in the next 5 years, and could make $1.5 million for your wife and children per year vs. $168,000...wouldn’t you do it?<<

With those numbers I’d finish out the term. But that’s just me.

I saw him on TV the other day too - first time in a long time. He looks old and ill. I didn’t recognize him at first. I hope he is leaving for his stated reasons, (financial) but I suspect other than that and truly hope that I am wrong. I wish him nothing but the best.

Have you ever heard of coverage limits? Maybe he has reached his?

You left off the joke. You are joking aren't you. There is no such thing for this level of government employee.

“thanks to Tony’s boss, many of them can and will lose their homes because Bush killed a medical exemption to his draconian banruptcy “reform” law.”

Yeah, I know. Sad.

So it just doesn’t feel like the truth that he is leaving over the reduced salary for one year.

I'm sorry but I believe Tony could no longer spew out the Bush doctrine and Bush's intentional ignoring of the Border problem which opened my eyes to his Globalistic view, "unforgivable"!

Bush is just like his daddy, no real commitment for the sovereignty of this country.

Bush has earned my disdain for his turning his back on the two Border Patrol agents whom he swore to protect in his oath of office.

Bush really is just a little man.

His views on the border and W’s are the same.
Have also heard him interviewed in the past few days
on Laura Ingraham on the subject.

Pat was a pretty good newsman before writing speeches. I think he may have won a Pulitzer, when it meant something.

...I wish him nothing but the best...

So do I but I lost a lot of respect for him due to his spinning for Bush on immigration. Another jumps off the sinking Bush ship of state.

168K in Ohio is big money.
Here in San Diego you could not buy a home and support yourself with that.

He also said it on Mark Levin’s show. He said he was absolutely upfront to everyone in the White House that he would only take and keep the job until his money ran out.

God bless you Tony. You are a good family man. I always enjoyed your radio program and the great stories you told.

Bush has earned my disdain for his turning his back on the two Border Patrol agents whom he swore to protect in his oath of office.

and in spite of the voices of the very people who put him in office...he pressed on with the immigration bill. Broke my heart but he won’t do it again. I’m through.
