Financial pressures force Snow departure
By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent
WASHINGTON - White House press secretary Tony Snow said Friday he'll leave sometime before the end of the Bush presidency because of financial pressures.
He declined to say when he would depart, but that, "I'm going to stay as long as I can."
The 52-year-old Snow, the father of three children, earns $168,000 as an assistant to the president but made considerably more as a conservative pundit and syndicated talk-show host on Fox News Radio. He was named press secretary on April 26, 2006.
The White House has been shaken by the resignations of some of President Bush's closest aides. Political strategist Karl Rove announced Monday that he would leave at the end of the month. Longtime Bush adviser Dan Bartlett left earlier this year and Andrew Card left earlier as Bush's chief of staff.
Bush's term ends on Jan. 20, 2009.
"I will not be able to make it to the end of this administration, just financially," Snow said. "This job has been such a pleasant surprise in how much I like it. I love it."
Snow has been undergoing chemotherapy after doctors discovered a recurrence of colon cancer in March. He said the last of eight scheduled chemotherapy treatments would be on Friday. On Monday he will have a CAT scan to evaluate his progress.
Sadly I think you hit the nail on the head. I suspect he’s looking for what he can leave for his family.
Shucks, I thought I’d seen the last of the lame posts on this thread.
Thank you Saveliberty!
If you should talk to Tony again, tell him Danae says he will be back to normal and cancer free in no time! I Pray for gratitude for the event, though it hasn’t happened yet, because I have complete faith that it will. Thank him for me and my family and let him know that he and his family are indeed in my prayers!
On the upside of him Leaving the White House, WE GET OUR SNOWMAN BACK! WooHoo!
I believe that he has financial pressure - cancer treatment does not come cheap. He has spent a lot of time in the hospital and has had multiple operations. Insurance does not cover it all. The other thing is that he still looks very sick and I’m sure he must be thinking about how his kids will get through college if he has to spend so much on health care expenses - and especially if he does not survive. The job itself, while he loves it, has got to be very draining physically and emotionally if he is not feeling well. He has to put his health and his family’s welfare before other considerations and I respect him for doing that.
Maybe McCain/Snow in '12!?
I can just see it now...
McCain/Snow proposed a comprehensive immigration plan today that would allow anyone residing on the Continents of South America and North America to become instant citizens of The United States of America; with Africa & Asia to be phased in within 4 years.
From the article:
Presidential spokesman Tony Snow's malignant cancer has returned and spread to his liver and elsewhere in his body, shaken White House colleagues announced Tuesday. They said he told them he planned to fight the disease and return to work.
Was this confirmed by Snow?
I have not heard it anywhere else?
He has medical bills, and other bills. Moreover, you are ASSUMING and that is totally uncalled for and disgusting.
I think you were being grossly insensitive to our long-time friend. That should have been pretty obvious in what I said. I don't care if Tony Snow says word one about why he's leaving, it's none of our business.
The left is so very vile.
I have not heard it confirmed by Tony. Until I do, I will not propagate it.
Ooh! Thank you for the update! I am so happy to hear that he is doing well and that the rumors of his “demise” are greatly exaggerated! He must be relieved to be done with those awful chemo treatments.
God bless Tony Snow! :*)
Excellent post. Really appreciate your homepage as well.
The insanity that has hit this board over the whole border issue has ruined it. People have just become unglued over it. There is not one, single, solitary thread about anything to do with the president that can’t be ruined by it, even about Tony Snow, one of the nicest people around in Washington.
I’ve never had an issue like this where I agree with the cause, but am so repulsed by the constant obsessing over it.
The system worked, people let their concerns be known, the bill failed, and still day after day, thread after thread, you can’t get away from it.
If FR still had a “post of the day” honor, this would be it. Like you, I am absolutely sick to death of it, and have curtailed my FR activity quite a lot because of it.
You are welcome, Chuck54!
Thanks for your prayers for Tony.
Hooray! It is good news, Kaslin. :-)
You are welcome, Lillee. Thank you for your kind words for Tony.
