When (and I say “when” because it’s looking pretty inevitable) Universal Health Care comes into being here in the U.S., they’ll be telling us what to do in a lot more ways than this. Let the games begin.

Smoking in a car with a child is child abuse.
Rush makes an idiotic comment that if smoking is so bad, why not ban it. Well, adults are free to make their own decisions. So are waiters in smoking restaurants (don't work there).
Children, however, are not able to make these decisions. Hence there is a state interest. No one here opposes the state preventing child abuse. As the son of someone who was an in-car smoker and suffered asthma-like illeness because of it (along with my sibling who did have asthma), and knowing that 2nd hand smoke is full of poison, I disagree fully with Rush and told him so in an email.
Nanny state is telling adults what they can and cannot do. Preventing children from being poisoned by their stupid parents is the reason government exists.

Forget King Bloomberg for a second (he’s not a Democrat, Republican, liberal...he is just a free lance dictator who is exacting revenge on his former tormentors when he was a two pack a day smoker)
Look at the NYC Health Czar Thomas Frieden. NYC spends 33% of their budget on Medicare and Medicaid costs. If they don’t get this under control, the city will go so broke in 10 years as the baby boomers age, that the 70’s fiscal crisis will look like the glory days.
Why else do you suppose they are trying so hard to reduce the DEMAND for health care by coercing the sheeple to quit smoking, eat right and excercise?
Does anyone here really thing they give a crap if Bob from the Bronx or Mary from Manhattan drops dead? No.
They are petrified at the monetary costs of health care to treat chronic diseases like diabetes.
Interestingly, I sort of agree with you...
If you put a gun to my head and forced me to pass one of the following two stupid nanny state laws:
Ban smoking in cars with chilruns or
Ban smoking in bars with degenerate drunks and lard asses
I would ban the former.

I loved the call from Lily. What it demonstrates perfectly is that liberals think like 9 yr olds.
Ask any 9 yr old if they think it’s fair that some people have money and some don’t.
Ask them if they think “war is a good thing or a bad thing”.
Ask them if they think everything should be free.
Ask them if they think that if a behavior makes one person sick then no one else should be able to do it.
The thing is, even a 9 yr old can be made to realize that life just doesn’t work that way. Unfortunately, the longer one goes uncorrected, the more impossible it becomes to make them see the light.
And I must admit...I played with a lot of Barbies in my time, but I never really considered licking one. I did give one of them a haircut and she had these two little “devil horns” sticking up though.

When children are "protected", then (liberal) children don't grow up.
I didn’t love the call from “Lily”. I think Rush handled it poorly and I think it demonstrates what Ann Coulter talked about as using “victims” as unassailable spokespeople for a liberal cause.
Who do you think put that 9 year old on the phone? It wasn’t her. But she could say anything she wanted to and Rush would look like a mean ogre if he took her on and told her what he really thought. Much like the libs did with the 9/11 widows.
My husband died on 9/11...therefore I am an expert on foreign policy. I am a 9 year old helpless child...therefore I can spew any left wing stupidity I want. You can’t debate me. I’m a victim.
I didn’t understand Ann Coulter’s method to her madness until now. It’s pure genius. She has taken it upon herself to break the taboo of the unquestioned “victim”.
Now we can tell Lily the 9 year old to shut up, play with her dolls, and call us back in 10 years when you are old enough to understand.
I think that many people who don't smoke (or who were subjected to it as children as you were) have a very strong (and perhaps justified) reaction to this particular issue, but how about we correct it ourselves rather than having the Nanny State step in? Besides, there is no guarantee anywhere that says that you have the right to perfect parents. Face it, not all parents are going live up to our expectations, but we love them anyway and we deal with it and we try to do better (as we see it) for our children.
I thought the liberals wanted government out of our homes (including the bedrooms) but here they are attempting to limit where you can smoke even in PRIVATE as a CONSENTING ADULT.
And when do the kids ever get to consent to be raised in a same sex couple household?
Oh wait, that was a politically correct demographic.
Aren't they going about it the wrong way? To cut health costs, they should enforce smoking: Smokers die about, what - 8? years younger, and those are expensive years health-wise. Smokers also have shorter final illnesses, and it's the final illness that's most expensive.
Do you also oppose awarding custody or permitting adoption/foster home placement of children with homosexual couples?
Or do you think that this poses no harm to the child’s mental (if not physical) well-being?
Care to prove that with scientific fact?
The three largest studies done to date disagree with that opinion.
Studies run about 80% against there being any lasting physical harm from ETS to an otherwise healthy human being.
