SHIZUOKA, Japan, Aug. 14 (AP) - (Kyodo)A 54-year-old man continued to drive a large motorcycle about 2 kilometers Monday after hitting the center divider on a national highway and losing his right leg below the knee in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, police said Tuesday. Kazuo Osada, a salaried worker, was unaware of the loss of his leg until he drove the distance apparently because his attention was focused on the strong pain he felt from the crash, the police said.
The police said Osada failed to negotiate a left turn and hit the center divider in a west-bound lane of Route 1's Hamana bypass in Hamamatsu at around 6:30 a.m. Monday.
Osada, who was on his way to Gifu Prefecture in a group of about 10 friends, did not fall in the accident and continued the ride before noticing part of his leg was missing, the police said.

I wonder if what caused him to notice was when he pulled up to a stoplight and tried to put his foot down to keep upright? Geeeeeeeeeeeeez!

What do you expect in a country where you can buy beer and liquor from vending machines on the street?

Unfortunately, the Japanese sell a lot worse than alcohol in their vending machines.

I can see this happening. He's on his bike, his lower leg is tucked under so all he can see is his thigh and knee. He scrapes the wall at highway speeds, and is in terrible pain because of it. Apparently there's no shoulder to the highway. He's deathly afraid (and rightly so) of reacting too hard in the opposite direction and eating a car as well. His adrenaline is flying sky high. His concentration is on keeping vertical, not hitting the wall again, and not stopping on the highway (in a car, you'd at least have some armor plating if someone fails to see you've stopped in the roadway). He holds his leg and even his knee from time to time in pain, but both hands need to be on the handlebars as much as possible. He might want to look at his leg, but leaning over and sticking out his leg might cause him to lose balance, so he decides to tough it out. After the first few seconds, his adrenaline has done its job, and he keeps going.
By the way, 2km at highway speeds will take less than 90 seconds. It's not like he failed to notice for an hour or so.
