Mrs Sarkozy urged to define her role :: Will the real Cécilia Sarkozy please stand up?
The Telegraph UK ^ | August 14 2007 | Henry Samuel

Will the real Cécilia Sarkozy please stand up? Or at least, France is asking, could she please decide on whether she wants the job of First Lady of the Republic?

The Elysée says Cécilia Sarkozy role as First Lady will be become clearer by the autumn

Is it the Mrs Sarkozy who snubbed a lunch with the American president's family due to a "sore throat", only to be seen shopping with friends the next day?

Or is it the Mrs Sarkozy who flew to Libya to meet Colonel Muammar Gaddafi to help secure the release of six medics accused of infecting children with HIV (and in doing so help secure French trade)?

Tongues wagged after her husband Nicolas arrived alone - and almost an hour late - at George W Bush's family retreat in Maine on Saturday for the hot-dog and hamburger lunch. After she was seen out and about on Sunday, they went into overdrive.

"Cécilia set a new record for making a swift recovery," said France Inter radio yesterday.

"With every day that passes, the mystery deepens: Who is Cécilia Sarkozy?" Le Telegramme said. "What does the wife of the president want? To live her life as she likes? In which case, why does she accept invitations, like that made personally by Laura Bush?"

"People will no doubt accuse us of making too much of these absences," Charente Libre, a regional daily, said. "But, without doubt, we would have paid less attention to this American episode if it hadn't been for the fact that Cécilia was so obviously prominent in Tripoli, at the request of her husband the president."

Mr Bush said he was "disappointed" but understanding after Mrs Sarkozy, 49, called Mrs Bush from the Sarkozy holiday home in nearby New Hampshire at the last minute to excuse herself.

It was not the first time she had turned protocol on its head: at her husband's first G8 summit in June she left other first ladies midway through, saying that she had to prepare a birthday party for her daughter.

The Elysée says her role will be become clearer by the autumn.

Mr Sarkozy was reported as admitting last month that: "Ultimately, my only real worry is Cécilia."

“Mr Sarkozy was reported as admitting last month that: “Ultimately, my only real worry is Cécilia.”

With a wife who prefers sitting down for a chat with Khaddafi to lunch with two American Presidents and their entire family, Sarko is going to have major soucis.

Cecilia is looking more like the French Donna Hanover every day.

‘Cecilia is looking more like the French Donna Hanover every day.’

Lets hope she doesn’t get treated the way Donna Hanover Guiliani did...

She’s french, for God’s sake, what do you want from her? And a reminder: he also is french, so keep an eye on him at all times and never expect anything from him. The french fancy themselves intellectuals and free thinkers and gadflies; you know...

Muz be that Sarkozy and wife are too conzervatif?

Hey, if Celie is too busy having fun in America to have 'ambergere et 'ot dogue avec Monsier Bush, who really gives a sweet f__K?

It sounds like she earned a holiday with the kids, and is strongly willed to keep her vacation a non-working one.

Good for her I say!

I see y'all are falling right into the MSM drive by media trap created just for you guys.

Ya know, the Brits do not want a US rapproachment with France, they want the USA to whine how much we miss Tony Blair, and how Gordon Brown is not the right stuff for our President. I am not at all surprised at the British Telegraph's spin on this lunch with the Bushe's, that paper has called our President every thing but a human being.

Instead our president seeks out Britains traditional European diplomatic nemisis: France. No wonder the telegraph is piqued, and I hope they stay that way.

You guys should give it a rest and let our president do his thing to rub Gordon Browns nose in British troop withdrawal from Iraq. The Brits have earned it for moving over to what promises to be a placation policy towards Islamic Fascists.(LOL) Vive La France et Vive Celie.

Well, I knew from the name that he wasn’t 100% french, but he lives and runs in elections in france, and he appears to be married to one of them. Never turn your back on him.

I see it as hit piece also. The Brit press is stoking the US/anti-France fire.

Err, except that she, apparently, lied about being ill? That’s not strong-willed: that’s deceitful, rude, and ill-mannered.

I kind of thought she might not really be ill...
