President Bush telephoned baseball slugger Barry Bonds on Wednesday and congratulated him for breaking the career home run record in major league baseball.
"He is a really good hitter," the president said to reporters on his way out of an economic briefing. "I said 'congratulations.'"
Bonds on Tuesday night broke Hank Aaron's record of 755 home runs. Bonds, an outfielder with the San Francisco Giants, hit No. 756 at his home park.
Bush said it was "my honor" to call Bonds.
Grow up, already. These are not mutually exclusive. He showed class in calling the new home run king in America's pastime and congratulating him. Geez...
I didn’t know that IC Light was so thinning.
Bush did the right thing calling him.
President Bush: “Hey Berry, got wood?”
Berry Bonds: “Huh? Oh, yeah. Very funny, Mr. President.”
You are probably right but I would have rather seen him critized for not congratulating him.
Barry Bonds is a disgrace and will probably have a negative impact on young athletes for decades to come.
It’s not Pres. Bush’s job to pass judgment on whether Bonds used steroids. Calling with congratulations was the right thing to do.
agree
Bush has a lot of class....it was the right thing to do.....
Right. Throw $1,000,000 back onto the field.
Make that Barry B*nds
Because he is the leader..like you say. What is
wrong with him having the social grace to recognize
someone’s acccomplishment?...some of you people are
acting like selfish little brats...I don’t think I
would care to associate with some of you. JK
OUCH!
Nowadays, I cringe almost every time somebody like Bonds is held up as a "hero" and treated like royalty when they really do nothing more than excel (either fairly or by cheating) at a game that is no longer the same game that Mantle and Gehrig played.
My real point here is that this country's priorities are really screwed up, perhaps hopelessly, by its obsession with celebrities and sports stars.
>>Right. Throw $1,000,000 back onto the field.
I’m not sayin’ it’s the smartest thing in the world someone could do, but I’d like to have seen it happen. :)
Well, your loss dude!
Don't worry it won't be long before the BUSH bashing starts, if it hasn't already, on this thread.
It is what some here at FR live for.
Not only that but the guy who emerged from the pile with the ball had to fight fifty insane fans to get it. There were many injuries and a fair amount of blood left in the bleachers.
“Barry Bonds? I would rather lose without him, the win with him” — Andy Van Slyke”

I was trying to remember that quote and who said it. Thanks.
Even the players didn’t like him. When it became obvious that Bonds wasn’t living up to his potential, he would always blame everyone else, even his own teammates. That sure went over well.
Also, if memory serves, I think Bonds was one of the first ones to start charging for his autograph, at least around these parts. That didn’t go over well with some fans — this is an old fashioned, blue collar town. The story was that some little tyke approached Bonds for an autograph and he said something like, “sure, that’ll be $10.” A swell guy.
Is it good politics to engage in backslapping with someone who has lower poll than you do? If it is, Bush had better start backslapping Reid and Pelosi, because they are the only ones who have lower poll numbers than both Bush and Bonds.
