I do believe that they are mutually exclusive, at least in terms of modern sports (excepting people Jim Thorpe, Babe Ruth, Jesse Owens, Jackie Robinson, Wilma Rudolph, Joe Louis, etc. who actually contributed something meaningful to society in the course of their careers).

Nowadays, I cringe almost every time somebody like Bonds is held up as a "hero" and treated like royalty when they really do nothing more than excel (either fairly or by cheating) at a game that is no longer the same game that Mantle and Gehrig played.

My real point here is that this country's priorities are really screwed up, perhaps hopelessly, by its obsession with celebrities and sports stars.

I agree with you 100%. I especially can't stand hollywood "stars". At least there's still some atheletes that treat people like people should be treated.
