RALEIGH -- Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson is the most popular GOP candidate for 2008 in North Carolina, a state that historically votes for Republicans in the presidential race. That's according to the Public Policy Polling's latest primary tracking poll.
Meanwhile, North Carolina-native John Edwards and Sen. Hillary Clinton are tied at the top of the Democratic presidential field.
No candidate has a clear majority of support though. Thompson, while leading all Republicans in the state, garnered just 30 percent of the vote. Edwards and Sen. Clinton were tied at 29 percent, while Sen. Barack Obama was third with 23 percent.
In the race for North Carolina governor, the poll found that current Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue extended her lead among Democrats while Bill Graham is heading up the Republican challengers.
I am not sure if that matters in the end or not, I was just fascinated to see the internals of the poll, which most don't let you see in that detail.
The headline could almost read
"Fred Dominates with Southern White Men"
Tim Russert is reporting Thompson will announce on Sept. 5th.i.e. unsubstantiated rumor, like July 4...

>>> Is there some unseen advantage at this time to being undeclared?
Well, there is definitely a “seen” advantage: lots of BUZZ, 1st or 2nd in most early-state primary polls, 1st or 2nd nationally, and raising money instead of spending it.
As someone else said: “It’s August!”
Except for us politi-geeks, NOBODY pays attention in August (even in the actual election year).
A recent analysis of fundraising and cash on hand revealed that (except for Rudy) virtually ALL the money raised so far (over $120M) by Republican candidates has been spent:
Giuliani has raised $35.6 million, but only has $18.3 million
<< Fred only $3.46 million over the last three weeks but hasnt spent any money yet either
Romney: $44.4 million raised, with only $3.1 million left
Paul has raised only $3 million, but still has $2.3 million on hand
McCain, has raised and spent $25.3 million with only $1.4 million left
Brownback has raised and spent $3.3 million with less than $500,000 left
Tancredo of the $2.8 million raised.has spent all but $500,000
Huckabee of his $1.3 million has $400,000 left
Hunter of $1.3 million raised has spent all but $200,000
Tommy Thompson campaign drowning in red ink after raising and spending only $890,000
Well put the pedal to the metal man! Ron Paul has gone from zero to 0.60% in 6 months!
So since Fred spent $350,000 of the 3.4 million, he is exactly tied for funds with Romney who is supposedly a money raising powerhouse, but he beats Romney in nearly every poll.
Plus, Romney has had to spend millions of his own money.
Oh, no, Fred’s DOOMED!! :p
Well, I do live in a log cabin in the mountains of north GA, but I don't believe in flying saucers so I guess I can't get on board Paul's express train that's highballing it straight to the White House (-:
He could be a write in. ;)
BTW I was not implying normal people with real cabins, more the Unabomber type shack...
Oh yeah, equal time...
Ron Paul 2008!
Matter of fact that may be a brilliant idea.
I mean time doesn’t really matter, Ron Paul wants us to go back to 1789...
I saw Ron Paul in one debate and I thought someone let lose a liberal Democrat into the debate on some of his views.
I looked at Ron Paul and kept thinking his doctor left him WAY under medicated.
If he wasn’t so much taller I’d swear it’s congressman Dennis the Menace in a Ron Paul suit...
Of course there are stilts, or his wife could be holding him up......
I don't think he's done that in his household.
