The French president, who has already drawn howls of protests for his unashamedly pro-Anglo-Saxon stance, spurned his homeland and the Francophone destinations favoured by his predecessors when he arrived yesterday in the select lakeside town of Wolfeboro, north of Boston.
The choice of an American destination was seen by some as proof of his desire to bolster Franco-American ties sorely strained by the invasion of Iraq.
"Mr and Mrs Sarkozy are on holiday at the invitation of friends in a house situated two hours' drive from Boston. They went there as a family on a regular flight," said an Elysée spokesman.
Mr Sarkozy, 52, his wife Cécilia and their son Louis are reported to be staying in a luxurious villa owned by Mike Apple, a former Microsoft executive, which costs £15,000 a week to rent. The residence has a private beach, a marina with room for four boats, a spa, private cinema and video gaming room.
Wolfeboro is not far from President George W Bush's family estate in coastal Kennebunkport, Maine, sparking suggestions yesterday in the French press that the two leaders might use the opportunity to get to know each other, perhaps going running together. Both are keen joggers.

He has been invited by President Bush to visit with the family in Kennebunkport. I am sure they have a lot to say to each other. They have a lot in common.
If he stops in my store on cape cod he’ll certainly be getting a discount.
I’ve been down on Frace for so long that it’s going to be difficult to reign it in. This guy does sound like the genuine article and someone we should back when we can.
Glad to see things go in this direction with the leadership in France.
Thanks Sarkozy! Best wishes for a good term in office and a thaw between our two nations.

I would cast my vote for Sarko, or anyone like him, in a NY minute.
Excellent Brie and Camembert from le President.
I suppose it doesn’t hurt to look at it again.

Now there's a bizarre apposition.
i always thought he was the second funniest kid in the hall.
Welcome aboard! Hooray Sarko!
“This guy does sound like the genuine article and someone we should back when we can.”
Especially with Blair gone and Brown in.
He’s wearing his Nike running shorts pretty well...(hmmm, and not a bad looking security detail)
Wonder if he’ll bump into Mitt Romney while he’s there. The Romney family has a home on Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro as well.
Thanks. Say, have you heard bad things about Brown. I thought he was going to continue on in about the same manner as Blair as far as the war was concerned. Am I wrong in that?
I especially like the guy to his left in the black. :-)
You have excellent taste! ;^)
