"The American campaign against the Japanese on Okinawa still raged when a war correspondent new to the Pacific theater stepped ashore on Ie Shima, a small island just west of Okinawa. Traveling with a group of infantrymen, the reporter was killed by a sniper's machine-gun bullets. Saddened by their loss, the soldiers paid tribute to their fallen friend with a simple plaque reading: "At this spot, the 77th Infantry Division lost a Buddy, Ernie Pyle, 18 April 1945."

I had about half as many students as I had last Friday. Same classes. The teachers get one day off in July and one in August, and this guy took back-to-back Fridays.

I had two students out of 20 for the 11:30-1:00 class.
But considering the number of girls walking the hallway with highly visible bathing suits beneath their tops, I'm amazed as many students stayed in the building all the way to 1pm with the boardwalk just a couple blocks away!

Interesting? Yeah. a bit. I handed out worksheets and I had a few that actually wanted to get the work done. They're taking a final exam on the 15th. Some of them just show up to sleep.

But, hey, I'm just the sub. I'm not there to make myself crazy. Those who want my knowledge are welcome to as much of it as they can absorb in 90 minutes. The rest can go back to their breakfasts and their newspapers, which they'll still be doing next summer.
