"The American campaign against the Japanese on Okinawa still raged when a war correspondent new to the Pacific theater stepped ashore on Ie Shima, a small island just west of Okinawa. Traveling with a group of infantrymen, the reporter was killed by a sniper's machine-gun bullets. Saddened by their loss, the soldiers paid tribute to their fallen friend with a simple plaque reading: "At this spot, the 77th Infantry Division lost a Buddy, Ernie Pyle, 18 April 1945."

We had another .5 or .6 of rain yesterday. Of course, it had to hit right at PM rush hour. We were about 1/2 way home when we ran into rain.

Most people slowed to the speed limit in the high traffic areas. The idiots on 1431 - a very curvy road - were running 5 - 10 miles over the posted speeds.

Department of Military Readiness: Coast Guard

On this day in 1790, the U.S. Coast Guard was created by Congress, which authorized Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton to build a small fleet of ten cutters to protect the coast. The Coast Guard continues to serve a critical role under the Department of Homeland Security and we at The Patriot offer our thanks for a job well done. Happy Birthday and Semper Paratus!
