Is this a different person from the editor who was shot today?
What was he working on? Follow the money, follow the crime.
Odd choice of weapons, a 12g. shotgun. I wonder if the victim has written anything about Islam lately.
Same person.
However, I think there may also be a bit of arrogance among the journalists who jump to the conclusion that this tragic event occurred because he "spoke truth to power". In my experience, people are rarely shot because of their job.
I expect the police are looking into: possible girlfriend with possible husband, possible gay lover, possible wife with possible boyfriend, possible drug deal involvement, possible mugging gone bad. There could be a bunch of reasons. People die everyday. But only journalists think they're singled out because of their important work.
Editor Of Oakland Post Fatally Shot In Broad Daylight
Police: 'Targeted Assassination'By Teresa Garcia
OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 2, 2007 (KGO) - A local journalist was shot and killed this morning on a downtown Oakland Street. It happened in broad daylight about 7:30 am and now the search is on for the gunman. 58-year old Chauncey Bailey was shot near Lake Merritt at the corner of 14th and Alice Streets.
This early morning shooting is a shock to the community of people who know Chauncey Bailey, a longtime journalist and Oakland resident. Police have gone so far as to call this a targeted assassination based on evidence they've collected. But why this man, beloved by so many?
58-year-old Chauncey Bailey was most recently promoted to editor of the Oakland Post, a weekly newspaper, covering city politics among other stories. Bailey was also involved in radio over the years - once a news director at KSBT - a soul beat station.
Oakland police say Bailey was shot on the corner on 14th and Alice Street around 7:30 this morning. He was most likely walking on his way to work at the Oakland Post, just a few blocks away.
Police have no answers yet on who did it, and even officers who know him are shocked.
Roland Holmgren, Oakland Police: "I've dealt with him numerous times he's interviewed me on numerous occasions and this is sad. This is truly sad, it is disheartening to see at 7:30 in the morning in downtown Oakland people being murdered - its madness."
Witnesses told police that Bailey was shot on the street multiple times by a suspect wearing all black clothing and some type of black headgear - that suspect left on foot. Police have no known motives at this time and say they'll look at all angles, even whether there were any issues regarding recent stories he wrote about.
Co-workers can't understand what went wrong.
Gwendolyn carter, co-worker at Oakland Post: "Chauncey was a great man. He wouldn't do stuff like be mean to people. He was always nice to me. He called me his little sister because I was the youngest one up at the Oakland Post."
Ron Dellums, Oakland Mayor: "Just let me say that it's extraordinarily painful when any person dies tragically in our community and certainly Chauncey. My sense of him was that he was always there at every event, with his video camera and his notes."
Many people heard about Chauncey Bailey's death, even the police chief came down this morning. It is obviously a shock to many people for it to happen like this. They are calling it targeted. They are asking the public and anyone who was in the area if you have information to please call. Police are working with limited information, they are not releasing exact details about what firearm was used and any more details about the subject other then the person was wearing black clothing and headgear. The bits of information the police do have they are keeping close to their vests.

Odd?
The guy (Serb or Croat Muslim whatever he was) in the Utah mall used a shotgun before the off duty cop ended it...
The same guy, was given a hero’s burial back home outside the US... betcha didn’t hear that one...
Why is it odd? If the gunman is going to be masked -- itself an indicating prior intent and planning -- a shotgun seems to be the result of planning as well.
I'd think that a load of buckshot would be a better guarantee of lethality than would a pistol.
Yeah, because there’s no possibility of another reason </sarcasm>
Guns are too Western. In the Religion of Peace they just chop off heads... |
Not if the idea was to not miss.
Ron, “Red” Dellums is mayor of Oakland. He must have taken Gov. “Moonbeam” Brown’s place. I wondered what rock Dellums slithered under.
it looks like the reporter

Not very often used as a weapon of choice for a hit now is it?
Even if it was a shorty, it is a little bulky.
Just what I was thinking. If he used 00 at close range, it would be like shooting him with a dozen or so .22s at once.
Like you said, whoever shot him really wanted to make sure he was definitely dead. Which is what you must do if you are a hired hit man.
Somehow I doubt this would have been said if he had been a conservative crusader.
And not if it was the only weapon he had. If all you have is a 12ga. that is what you use. Also no rifleing on shot.
