Yup.
And a few passes with a file will alter the end so that its impressions will change - even though the weapon remains functional.
I learned this from a DPD forensics tech.

That’s true, a badly modified weapon can do some strange things to pellet dispersion.

But you right, it will have to be found first. Also, I used to have a rifle that left a distint line on the side of each case. Not just from bolt face. Anyway, its probable in the river.

Yes, but the rifle was a high pressure metal round in a metal chamber.
Unless the shotgun has a damaged chamber, it won’t mark the plastic hull of the round.

None of the so-called reporting on this I've read so far makes clear that the Oakland Post is an activist weekly catering to a Black readership. That's probably not a big deal in the great scheme of things except this is Oakland, home of the Black Panthers, Hell's Angels, some of the worst Black slums in America and Black politics cast in the radical Marxist mode.
Ron Dellums and Barbara Lee are political products of this area and I expect all hell is going to break loose over this. Remember, Jerry Brown, former Oakland Mayor and well known for his radical Left views, is now California's Attorney General. Fasten your seat belts!

Odd choice of weapons, a 12g. shotgun. I wonder if the victim has written anything about Islam lately. That would be: Odd choice of method, beheading. I wonder if the victim has written anything about Islam lately.
I'd guess not...

Yeah, because islamists would never gun down someone who spoke ill of their precious faith. What a ridiculous notion. How dare anyone even consider the possibility.

00 buck is .32 caliber and there are nine pellets in a shell. Ya, I once did a small presentation on why banning guns was stupid. In the presentation, I mentioned that in 1905, (just picked a date) there was a firearm capable of firing NINE shots with one pull of the trigger. The audience was amazed! Then I said they sold them at Walmart.

Also no rifling on shot. To be really clean he would need to take the time to pickup his spent shells. The firing pin marks on the primer and the ejector marks on the shell can be identified also he may leave finger prints on the shells.

I just hope the LEOs find the shooter with the gun under his couch. XX (fingers crossed)

If it was a double barrel just don’t crack it open and eject them.

00 buck is .32 caliber and there are nine pellets in a shell.00 buck is .33 inch diameter and contains 8, 9, or 12 pellets, depending on manufacturer and the particular ammo, in 2 3/4" length shells. 3" shells usually contain 15 pellets, and 3 1/2" shells 18 pellets.
Tests that I have seen show average spreads (for five shots) of 5 1/2" to 14", depending on the ammo, for IC chokes, at 20 yards. Cylinder bores would likely be a bit larger.

Just to let you know, there were shells left at the scene. I should have guessed that, otherwise how would they have known that it was a 12 gage.

If San Francisco had concealed carry laws this MIGHT not have happened (or been attempted).
A criminal attempting to do this in a lot of small towns in the southwestern USA could end up with a lot of holes in him from a number of directions.

If it was a double barrel just dont crack it open and eject them. That would be a very good Idea. You would have to carry a side arm (revolver) just in case you meet resistance such as a bystander willing to take you on. Or you could have a back up such as the driver of your get away.
