Edwards Attacks Saudi Arms Deal
NY Sun ^ | August 2, 2007 | Josh Gerstein

Aiming to capitalize on a sluggish response from his rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination, John Edwards is hammering home his opposition to a proposed $20 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia... the former senator of North Carolina attacked the Saudi arms deal at the outset of his speech to a $15-a-head lunchtime fundraiser at a San Francisco nightclub. A short time later, Mr. Edwards again skewered the proposed arms sale, though no journalist asked about it. "This is a bad idea for a lot of reasons, including creating an arms race in one of the most volatile regions in the world, escalating the problems with Iran, and on top of the fact that Saudi Arabia has not done the things that it needs to do in Iraq in controlling terrorism," Mr. Edwards told about 700 of his supporters... Mrs. Clinton has not taken a public position on the arms sale, her spokesman, Philippe Reines, said yesterday.

I guess Iran hasn't been involved in Iraqi terrorism after all, because the Breck Girl said it.

A quick search will turn up lots of coverage of this, mostly in the form of hostile op-eds from various water-carriers for the other side.

Okay, without sarcasm, I believe that it is time that everyone ask, “what is going on here?”

Come on. Even Edwards cannot believe that he has a valid run or that a majority of the American people are suddenly going to vote him in as POTUS. - unless he is deluded, and, in the absence of any hard evidence to support the contention that he is truly insane, I deny that he is.

The guy can’t even hold on to public office in his own state, and couldn't deliver it for Kerry either - which proves that his political clout is nil, so whats the big deal?
- What has he to gain by pushing up another failed bid for high office?

I contend that he is playing an angle here, just like any other ham and egg huckster bottom feeder does.

But I don’t see the play yet.

Edwards is tempted by the Dem formula. In 2004, Dems ran their most liberal Senator for the Presidency, and ran a Red State senator for the VP spot.

This is because Karl Rove taught the Dems in 2000 and 2004 that if Dems don’t win Red States, that Dems don’t win the White House.

Winning New York and California, but no Red States, means that Dems lose the White House.

So Edwards sees that Dems have to dip into the well to pick either a Red State Democrat or a pro-war Democrat for their 2008 ticket.

Frankly, that’s what kept the idiot Senator from Florida in the 2004 race for so long, too.

What does this mean? It means that Edwards knows that Dems won’t let Obama be on their 2008 ticket (he doesn’t add anything in Red States, and Blacks are going to vote 90% Democratic with or without him, doesn’t matter).

Well, that leaves a pretty small pool. Dems could pick a general, or a pro-war Independent like Lieberman, or a Red State Dem like Governor Richardson...or Edwards (well, not really...he’s in denial about that part because Dems know that Edwards can’t even swing his own state anymore).

Dems have to win some Red States in 2008 to win the White House. No “red states” means no White House.

So Edwards sees himself as a veteran White House campaigner with the necessary “red state” pedigree. This causes him to be self-delusional about the rest.

Good analysis.

>Red State Dem like Governor Richardson

I have been thinking right along those lines, as well.

I believe that the Clinton formula will be to hold on to the states that Kerry won, disregard the South, and work like Hell to turn a SW or maybe a MW state.

Richardson fits right into those plans, provided that he doesn’t carry too much baggage with him.

What if some dirt hits the fan concerning Mrs. Clinton.
Maybe some dirt the Breck Girl himself has in waiting. And GOD knows there is lots of serious mud hiding in her closet,(murder, theft, enableing a sexual predator, etc). Or maybe proof of Mr. Clinton bedding other fat little girls.
At the same time proof emerges that Mr. Heussein Obama is a closet mooselimb or maybe on the take from a developer crook.
Suddenly the Breck Girl liiks good for the dems.

Send the Breck Girl on a fact-finding mission to Iran, Fraudi Arabia, Pakistant, etc. Be sure to switch all his clothes in his suitcases at the last minute with burkah’s so that’s all he can wear. Add sign on the back of each one saying “I am one of Allah’s 72 virgins promised for you”.

He’s got a low-budget campaign, which means he can hang on for quite a while; there’s an anticipation that neither Obama or Clinton can wrap up a majority of the delegates, and some kind of brokered deal (such as a Clinton-Obama ticket, mirroring the Reagan-Bush ticket of 1980) will be in the offing. The better placed Edwards is in the delegate count, the more say-so he’ll have; furthermore, his negatives are very small, so he could wind up the nominee, as crazy as that sounds. He appears willing to take that chance.

Well put. As Mark Russell said, in jest, regarding Ferraro's VP nomination in 1984, "that'll hold 'em another four years."

Assuming that he gets any delegates at all.

Personally, I have doubts that he will break into double digits.
