Why we must close the net Why we must close the net
The Sun ^ | Sir Elton John

Posted on 08/01/2007 4:00:17 PM PDT by dangerdoc

POP legend Sir Elton John wants the internet CLOSED DOWN.

Never one to keep his opinions to himself, the Rocket Man has waded into cyberspace with all guns blazing.

He claims it is destroying good music, saying: “The internet has stopped people from going out and being with each other, creating stuff.

“Instead they sit at home and make their own records, which is sometimes OK but it doesn’t bode well for long-term artistic vision.

“It’s just a means to an end.

“We’re talking about things that are going to change the world and change the way people listen to music and that’s not going to happen with people blogging on the internet.

“I mean, get out there — communicate.

“Hopefully the next movement in music will tear down the internet.

“Let’s get out in the streets and march and protest instead of sitting at home and blogging.

“I do think it would be an incredible experiment to shut down the whole internet for five years and see what sort of art is produced over that span.

“There’s too much technology available.

"They put their music on Myspace or some other forum and let the listeners decide instead of some stuffed suit who thinks he knows better."

That's also a "problem". You see, record companies don't get their 'bite' in that business model. The major record labels have been rendered completely irrelevant. They continue to scratch and claw at the lid of the coffin, in spite of the fact that the undertaker has finished his work.

He can get back to us when he stops selling his stuff through Internet stores like CDNow and Amazon too.

The man is a loon.

I like to pretend there was two Eltons. The first one died around 1978. The current one lives off the first one.

Sort of reminds me of the question: What's ugly and yellow and lives off of dead beetles?...

Wasn’t Ellie The Nellie also the one who wanted to ban all religion?

“The first one died around 1978.”

Is that about the time he got genital warts in his throat?

You're right. I was being selfish and thinking of the bands and the consumers. Silly me. ;)

When digital cameras came out and people were able to print their own pictures, the film companies just thought of other ways to make money in the industry. I guess the record companies don't have any of the ingenuity.

The last time elton john had any “artistic vision”

was when Bernie Taupin was writing all the songs.

Right on! I loved Elton John in the early to mid-70s!

Sir Elton reminds me that the original concept and purpose of knighthood has come a long way...down.

Very true. Any adaption they have made with technology has been by far offset by pissing off a great many of their customers. The image of multi billion dollar per year record companies suing teen aged kids over a few songs being downloaded couldn't be a good thing from a PR standpoint. lol
