Surgeon ‘hastened man’s death’ to harvest his kidneys for transplant (California)

A doctor has been charged with deliberately hastening the death of a disabled man so that he could harvest his kidneys for another patient, in the first case of its kind in America.

The case centres on allegations that Hootan Roozrokh, a transplant surgeon in California, ordered a nurse to administer lethal doses of narcotic painkillers and sedatives to Ruben Navarro, who was terminally ill, after taking him off life support. The man died hours later.

Prosecutors claim that Dr Roozrokh, 33, acted without a legitimate medical purpose in his handling of Mr Navarro, 25, who suffered from a neurological disorder and had been kept alive artificially for several days after suffering respiratory and cardiac arrest.

Rosa Navarro, the patient’s mother, had agreed that her son’s organs should be used for transplant in the event of his death but did not authorise him to be removed from life support or give

Hootan Roozrokh? I think I'll just wikipedia my illnesses from now on, and do all my surgery at home.

I asked this question on another thread yesterday, and I still don’t know the answer.

I thought transplant surgeons didn’t have any access to the patient until they had already been declared brain dead by the patient’s doctors, and until it had been determined the patient was a consenting donor (or had family’s permission)

So, I’m left wondering how was it this man could order medicine for the patient?

How is it he had any access to his man whatsoever?

"The case centres on...Hootan Roozrokh, a transplant surgeon in California..."

I wonder where he was transplanted from.

A case like this will get people thinking twice before they sign up for organ donation.

I heard about this earlier, and my question is wouldn't killing someone with drugs render the organs unusable?

I remember a story from several years ago about a guy who locked himself in his car in his garage and shot himself in the chest with a shotgun. Wasn't found for a couple of days. When he was found, he had a note stating he wanted to donate his organs. I hope his grave marker simply says 'DUH'...

This is perfectly acceptable in France.

Remember that woman who had the face transplant (After falling asleep high on crack?)

She got that face from a “donor” who was actually a “vegetable” and then that vegetable was kept alive to harvest more parts.

Then the french woman woke up and snuck out for a cigarette.

Sounds to me like this doctor watches too much “House”

Precisely the reason that many people give for refusing to sign up for organ donation.

Now this criminal has proven that their argument has some validity.
