Harry Potter: 3 More Things I Learned
ExileStreet ^ | 8/1/07 | John Mark Reynolds

I am warning those who have not finished the series . . . and there must be still a few of them by now. . . that there are spoilers ahead. I have just finished the last book . . . having spent an enjoyable evening with it thanks to Sam’s Club and an indulgent wife.

I am done with Harry Potter and enjoying the literary aftertaste the way one enjoys a fine meal almost as much after it is done as when it is being consumed . . . though it is a bit sad that the series is finished.

And it is really finished . . .

Will one be able to re-read the books with pleasure?

I think the answer is only a tentative “yes.” If one knows the “puzzles” and “the secrets” of the book, it will not take away the charm of the characters or the fun of a good Quidditch match, but the first read will always be the best.

The strength of these books is in the plot and the second read, when everything is known, will be satisfying for finding all the clues to what happens . . . but I am hard pressed to know if I will want to re-read them a third or fourth time.

A really great book is as good on the fourth read . . . and some children’s books (Little White Horse) are better.

I deeply enjoyed the last book and thought the ending satisfying. For those who found them quite Christian, they will find much in this last book to give strength to their idea.

Thank you very much! It was actually about 5:30, Eastern Daylight Time, when I got my chili in the pot and poured a glass of California red wine.

(The Guinness is just a literary trope.)

Aren’t all evil dictators mostly fluff and flattery? All they’re really good at is killing.

Or getting others to do that dirty work FOR them.

I searched for a picture of a clock that had nothing but “5”s on it’s face, but couldn’t find one. The father of a friend of mine used to have one in their cabin at our Fish Camp. Of course, the cabin was named “Sip’n”

I think my great-uncle had that clock at his deer cabin!

No. It is one example of real occultic things (in this case, a very famous occultist) hidding in HP.

By your logic, if JKR wrote about a Minister of Magic named Michael Gorbachev who tried to implement magic socialism but she made him out to be a bumbling, moronic idiot, you'd call it support for communism.

Your ignorance in not having actually read what you're criticizing is apparent. Divination is made to look like a joke. No one in their rational mind could call what JKR wrote about divination occultic.

I knew all I needed to know about you when you talked about having seen all 5 movies just to see how the occult was infiltrating America. People goofy enough to say that they spent 11 hours watching movies about a topic they abhor for "research purposes" will say anything.

You are assuming facts that are not in evidence...

Overruled. I believe it's been established quite clearly!

Just got home from the movie! Finally! It was pretty good. I still would have liked to see more of the actual fight scenes between the death eaters and Harry and his friends. But overall pretty good. Dumbledore was much better!!! And that lady that played Bellatrixx was really good, Umbridge too.
