RALEIGH (AP) -- Former state House Speaker Jim Black has five months to pay a $1 million fine on state political corruption charges.
That was the decision of a judge this afternoon at a sentencing hearing for the Mecklenburg County Democrat.
Wake County Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens also sentenced Black to serve up to ten months in prison. That term is to run concurrently with a federal five-year sentence Black received earlier this year after pleading guilty to a federal corruption charge.
Black began serving that sentence Monday.
Stephens said the federal government took care of taking away the power and influence. He said it was the purpose of his sentence to take away the money.
State prosecutors accused Black of giving former GOP Representative Michael Decker as much as $58,000 in cash and campaign contributions to switch political parties in 2003. The move helped Black remain co-speaker
I don’t understand why this hasn’t been national news. This idiot was the Speaker of the House for the state of North Carolina...doesn’t that warrant as much National News as Ted Stevens?!?!
I guess if he was conservative...it would have been all over the news.
After the Nifong affair, I doubt anybody would be surprised by other episodes of official misconduct and corruption in North Carolina.
He's rat.
'nuff said.
Another shame on NC.
This article doesn't mention that Mr. Black had $500K mysteriously to show up in his campaign fund - yet he has no idea how it got there - blamed his secretary today in Court. Then that $500K got moved out of his campaign fund but perhaps by a backdated check.....soon to be followed by another $500K given to Mr. Black by the chief lobbyist for the videopoker people who were pushing to have this legalized in NC. But Mr. Black says that was legitimate - it was just a loan so he could take care of a building in Charlotte that needed help.....yet it was from this lobbyist...how nice!
“had $500K mysteriously to show up in his campaign fund - yet he has no idea how it got there..”
Sounds like another “Tin box Tom” one of the hapless crooks caught in the 1930’s investigation in NYC that was in the musical “Fiorello.” When “Tin box” was asked how he got all the money they found in his tin box, he said “I don’t know. It must have grown. I put a little in there and it must have just grown.” Needless to say Tin box was a democrat.
LOL -yes
