I taped a segment on the O'Reilly Factor for airing tonight to defend Free Republic against charges that it is a hate site. The segment will air in the 'D block' around 8:35 p.m. EDT and rerun at 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. EDT.

Rather than tell how it went, I'll leave it for folks to watch and decide for themselves. I hope I did right by FR.

We'll be having company tonight as some of Bill O'Reilly's two million-plus viewers check out FR for themselves. So please bear that in mind as you comment tonight. The Daily Kos is waging a very nasty personal campaign of retribution against O'Reilly. No sense in us piling on. Let's use this as an opportunity to show people why FR is the best conservative site on the web.

I wonder how much O’Reilly really hangs around FR. I would guess not often, after witnessing the hit job he did on FR.

O'Reilly doesn't like FR because most on FR don't like him and say so in various ways in their posts. I Really do have doubts about the post he mentioned (I hate blacks). Anyone that has ever spent time on FR knows that a post like that wouldn't last 2 seconds before being pulled. Makes me think someone from BOR's camp did a post and run just for this show tonight. I'm serious!

BOR said today the comments he read he found them today on FR. I think the mods should look for the exact comments BOR said he found, cause I bet they are old comments, and not something posted recently, and probably taken out of context.

If he really saw these things on FR, don't you think he or his staff would have a screen cap of the alleged "hate comments" to prove that he didn't just pull it out of his arse?

Why is that unrealistic?
The current mods all seem to have different standards and none of the so-called “rules” are enforced equally.

Over the past year, I have been visiting this site less & less. The atmosphere is hateful and the mass bannings of old time freepers who were accused of ridiculous things was just embarrassing.

This site used to be great. That has not been the case for quite some time. This used to be a site with intellectual debates instead of name calling. This site used to be fun as well as respectful. The growth & popularity of this site along with uneven rule enforcement & bizarre bannings has been it's downfall.

Those who don't see that are probably among the intolerant or too new to know better.

Kristinn, you did very well, but I wish O’R would have produced the offending posts rather than just claim he saw them. In all the years I’ve been on FR (since 1998), I’ve only seen a couple of posts like the ones he used as examples, and they were removed almost immediately. I think he made it up.

I don't think any of us can say that there aren't plenty of examples of offensive posts when we don't read them all individually, and even the moderators can't read them all. Even if O'Reilly hadn't mentioned a "hate blacks" post, he could have found other examples. For example, do you realize how many posts I've read that call for the killing of ALL Muslims? LOTS. And I've never seen one deleted yet.

Bill was wrong and I guess we will have to call him to the carpet for it.

For the record, I am a Black conservative (yeah I know, its interesting) and I have gone to many Freeper Functions in DC and here in Texas, and have been treated like family by all I have met. I find the “I hate blacks” comment from Bill a serious improbability because of the fantastic treatment I have been subjected to from my crazy (lol) freeper family.

Let’s let Bill know how we feel about the Right wing hate site label

Actually, O’Reilly goes overboard trying to prove his neutrality. He pans FreeRepublic because it’s the largest conservative site on the internet (at least that I can think of)that isn’t run by professional journalists.

A quick Google located this thread from 2001 that has the phrase "homosexuals are dogs" in it.

We stumbled across a short term sleeper troll a few weeks back. Something about a post seemed a little over the top so I did some digging and found comments about "rounding up the gays" and brought it to the attention of my fellow FReepers and before long he was gone.

This might be a good thread for people to post to Bill O’Reilly and maybe even some will come forward and apologize for some of the comments made here last night. It’d go a long way in helping the reputation of this website.

I don't think this will happen. There are more and more posters on FR who act like young thugs thinking they are tough because they use crude language and call people names. It's almost a moderate, right wing version of the "Gangsta" culture. The reputation of FR was seriously hurt tonight. I don't know if BO really found all of the trash he said he found on FR just today, I hope not.

I don't know what the solution is, I'm sure JR can't afford full time paid moderators, but the discourse does seem to be deteriorating. There are many females I know that I would not recommend get on FR because of the crudity of many posters. This is not right.

I'm willing to take any course that will get us back to a forum about ideas, not the emotional, name calling, crudities that have become common on many threads.

You did a good job, kristinn (thanks). O’Reilly did point out that the Kos is much worse, and the other night he mentioned that it is their editorial writers who are hateful. You made it clear that it is virtually impossible to catch hate as it comes in each moment. And, I’ve never seen the examples of hate that Bill mentioned. Free Republic is awesome!
